College of Engineering Remembers Tony Mitchell

Tony L. Mitchell, retired associate professor of electrical and computer engineering (ECE), assistant dean emeritus of the College of Engineering and an inaugural ECE Hall of Fame inductee in 2015, passed away April 1. Mitchell also was an alumnus, having earned a Ph.D. in ECE in 1987 on a US Air Force graduate fellowship. He was the first African American full-time student to earn that degree from NC State. Mitchell served on the Shelton Leadership Center Board of Advisors and was a member of the Chancellor's Circle giving society for several years.

Diversity in STEM Symposium Highlights Inclusive Spaces

About 300 people from across NC State and the Triangle attended the College of Sciences’ second Diversity in STEM Symposium in February. The theme of the event, sponsored by BASF and featuring many alumni speakers, was “Creating Inclusive Spaces."

NC State Makes Strong Showing on ‘Power 100’ List

Chancellor Randy Woodson and a number of NC State donors and volunteers landed spots on Business North Carolina’s “Power 100” list, which, according to the magazine, cites “influential folks who are making a significant impact in their enterprises, industries and, in many cases, the broader community.” Other were named to the magazine's supplemental “icons” list of senior business leaders.

Engineering Alumnus Named President of George Mason University

Dr. Gregory Washington, a three-time graduate of the College of Engineering at NC State, has been named as the eighth president of George Mason University. Washington, currently the dean of the Henry Samueli School of Engineering at University of California, Irvine, is a member of the NC State Engineering Foundation's board of directors. He is an accomplished researcher who specializes in dynamic systems, with an emphasis in the modeling and control of smart material structures and systems.

Alumna Makes Business NC Power 100 List

Sepi Saidi, named to Business North Carolina’s Power 100 List, has stayed engaged in NC State's Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering by serving on the advisory board and delivering keynote speeches at events it hosts, such as the 2019 American Society of Biological Engineers Southeastern Regional Student Rally. She's also a member of the NC State University Foundation Board.

Chuck Flink, a professor of practice in landscape architecture at NC State, as well as a volunteer and donor, sat down with the university's Abstract to explain the importance of greenways and their potential in developing cities and communities. Flink is the author of "The Greenway Imperative: Connecting Communities and Landscapes for a Sustainable Future."

In Memoriam: Bob Jordan

Alumnus Bob Jordan, who served North Carolina as a public official and business leader, died earlier this month. Jordan is remembered for his unwavering support of NC State for more than 60 years. He was a member and chair of the university’s Board of Trustees, among other roles, and his service and philanthropy earned him two of NC State's top honors: the Watauga Medal, for service, and the Menscer Cup, for philanthropy.

Friends of Arts NC State Board Awards the Bowers Medals

The Friends of Arts NC State Board of Advisors presented the 2019 Bowers Medal of Arts to Robert Black, Ormond Sanderson and Bing Sizemore. All three honorees have enhanced the arts at NC State and across North Carolina, playing critical roles in the construction and reopening of the Gregg Museum of Art & Design.
