For Pets in Recovery at NC State, Small Stuffed Animals Make a Big Difference

Before the COVID-19 pandemic began, pet owners often left a little bit of home with their pets — usually a toy or blanket — when they were admitted to the NC State Veterinary Hospital. Since late last year, hundreds of stuffed animals have been donated to the hospital by veterinary technicians, hospital staff, CVM students and community members to fill the void created by COVID-19 restrictions.

Essential Work

Food and housing insecurity has risen among NC State students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks to the Pack Essentials program and the generous donors who have supported it, the university has been able to alleviate some of the financial and emotional stress for students facing financial hardship via Student Emergency Fund grants, meal plan scholarships, meal shares and resources from Feed the Pack food pantry.

Anonymous Donors Provide Vital Support for Deans’ Priorities

A College of Engineering alumnus and his wife have provided a significant legacy gift that will be used by future deans to pursue priorities related to research, teaching and programmatic needs that may not be covered through other revenue sources. The couple, who wish to remain anonymous, have made a bequest through their estate plans that will provide funding to the College of Engineering discretionary funds.

One of the first things Caitlyn Sosbe did after being accepted to NC State was to get involved in the university’s TRIO Student Support Services Program, which helps students overcome class, social and cultural barriers to education. Donor support supplements federal funds to help students like Caitlyn thrive in TRIO.

More Students Struggle With Basic Needs Due to Pandemic

After a 2017 study found an alarming rate of food insecurity and homelessness among NC State students, the university rallied to solve the problem, expanding and promoting assistance programs such as Pack Essentials. Donor support for these programs is critical as students confront the economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic.

As renovations for the Design Center at 111 Lampe Drive continue to progress, students are preparing to utilize the blank spaces for fall 2021. One company, Eastman, recently pledged a major gift to become the first partner to name a space in the new facility.
