An Easy Way to Give

Edna Gaston’s love for NC State runs deep. Gaston has been a loyal supporter of the university over the years, and she and her late husband, Perry, helmed a famous tailgate at Carter-Finley Stadium for many football seasons. Gaston recently designated gifts to Athletics, the College of Veterinary Medicine and the Extension Master Gardeners program through her will.

My Student Experience: Elementary Education Student Erika Allen ’23 Reflects on Internship

After earning her associate’s degree, Erika Allen ’23 took a gap year to discover her calling. She ended up serving as a children’s youth director at her church, and through that experience, she found a love for teaching as a way to give back to her community. As one of two students selected to participate in the College of Education Summer Internship Program, she was able to serve her home community while honoring the memory of Chantal Warfield ’19, for whom the program was established.

New Partnership Aims to Ensure a Sustainable Future for the Outer Banks

The College of Natural Resources has partnered with Twiddy & Company, a hospitality firm that manages more than 1,100 vacation homes on the Outer Banks, to launch the Lighthouse Fund for Sustainable Tourism. The fund supports Whitney Knollenberg, an assistant professor in the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management, as she conducts research and outreach activities across the Outer Banks to promote sustainable tourism development.

A Lifetime of Commitment

William O’Brien ’81 created his legacy and boosted NC State’s through his work as an alumnus, volunteer and donor. He’s honoring his experiences with the Caldwell Fellows program by creating a new endowment through planned and current use gifts that will continue serving Caldwell Fellows far into the future.

The NC State University Libraries community mourns the passing of former Libraries Director Isaac T. Littleton, whose many accomplishments included starting the Friends of the Library. Memorial contributions may be made to the NC State University Libraries or the Dorothy Young Littleton Endowment.

Butler, Stutts and Washington Receive Distinguished Engineering Alumnus Award

Linda Butler, Carl Stutts Jr. and Gregory Washington received the Distinguished Engineering Alumnus award (DEA) from the College of Engineering for 2020. The DEA award is the highest honor the College of Engineering bestows upon its graduates and typically comes with an award dinner in the fall. The 2020 event had to be postponed because of COVID-19, but the college hopes to recognize these winners and its 2021 honorees during a live ceremony this fall.

Grounds Services is saving money and boosting sustainability by growing flowers and plants in its own greenhouse on the west side of campus. A $7,100 grant from the Sustainability Fund is making it possible.

Finance to Philanthropy: Bud Murphy ’69 Gains Pride in Textile Degree

Four years ago, alumnus Bud Murphy ’69 attended a luncheon where David Hinks, dean of the Wilson College of Textiles, was the lead speaker. Murphy has been more engaged in the college’s work, with a particular pride in its military-related projects, ever since.
