Meet the 2018 Miller Fellows

Seven young innovators have been chosen as 2018 Miller Fellows. The program (which also honors Dr. Tom Miller, senior vice provost for academic outreach and entrepreneurship) provides financial support and other opportunities to NC State student entrepreneurs who commit to developing their startups full-time in the six months following graduation.

Support from the Rodney Swink and Juanita Shearer-Swink Landscape Architecture Graduate Student Award helped Corey Dodd get across the finish line and complete his Master of Landscape Architecture degree. The College of Design alumnus aspires to a career related to historic preservation, working with a city’s parks or planning department.

The NCSU Libraries Fellows Program has named four fellows for 2018-20. The program, supported by endowment donors, develops future leaders for academic libraries, with a focus on science, engineering and digital librarianship, on diversity, and on library management.

Working to Improve Honeybee Health

David Tarpy, professor of entomology and plant pathology and the NC State Extension apiculturist, received a grant from the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research’s Pollinator Health Fund to support research on the impact of pesticide exposure on honeybee colony disease prevalence and reproductive potential. The FFAR grant is being matched by a graduate fellowship from the North Carolina Agricultural Foundation Inc.

$4.5 Million Bequest to Benefit NC State’s Applied Math Program

An anonymous couple has made a $4.5 million bequest to the College of Sciences Foundation to benefit students and faculty in applied mathematics. The gift commitment, one of the largest ever received by the college, will endow a distinguished faculty chair, an undergraduate scholarship fund and a graduate fellowship in the Department of Mathematics.

College of Natural Resources doctoral student Matthew Stillwagon is studying how nitrogen and phosphorus cycles in the soil and water are altered by elevated salinity. The Global Change Fellowship provides training in science communication and networking opportunities that will help him share his research with key stakeholders.
