Coat of Excellence: Gratitude for Following the Biology for Blu

Gabrielle Paul-McKenzie has been honored with a Coat of Excellence Award from Steve and Beth Fowler in recognition of her work with their dog Blu. The Coat of Excellence program is a special way clients at the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine and Hospital can honor a faculty clinician, intern, resident or staff member who has touched their lives and the lives of their animals. The $10,000 donation helps support veterinary hospital services and includes a white lab coat embroidered with the name of the honoree.

Lascelles Named DuBose Distinguished Professor

Duncan Lascelles, professor of translational pain research and management in the College of Veterinary Medicine, has been named to the Dr. J. McNeely and Lynne K. DuBose Distinguished Professorship in Musculoskeletal Health. The professorship was made possible by a $1 million gift from the Duboses that was matched by $500,000 from the Distinguished Professors Endowment Trust Fund.

Outstanding Mobile Vet Service Earns Cannedy Coat of Excellence

Allen Cannedy, director of diversity and multicultural affairs at the College of Veterinary Medicine, was recently honored with a Coat of Excellence by Susan Ward, the college’s foundation board vice president, for his work as a large animal veterinarian. Cannedy, who will be stepping down from his role in the fall, is well known in the CVM community for his work as a mentor, recruiter, advisor and friend in service of inclusivity and equity.

Together Again at Last for the 38th Annual Awards Banquet

The College of Veterinary Medicine community recently assembled to celebrate a special tradition: its annual awards banquet at the Talley Student Union on NC State’s main campus. Among the awards bestowed at the event was the annual PetDesk Scholarship for Equity in Veterinary Medicine, given to Kier Way.

Groundbreaking Pain Researcher Duncan Lascelles Will Receive Distinguished Professorship

Internationally recognized expert Duncan Lascelles, professor of translational pain research and management at the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine, will be the recipient of the Dr. J. McNeely and Lynne K. DuBose Distinguished Professorship in Musculoskeletal Health. Lascelles’ groundbreaking research focuses on developing ways to measure the many dimensions impacted by pain in animals, as well as probing tissues from well-phenotyped animals with spontaneous disease to understand the neurobiology that drives the pain.

NC State Names New Dean of College of Veterinary Medicine

Kate Meurs has been named dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine following a nationwide search. Her appointment becomes effective April 1, pending Board of Trustees approval. Meurs will be the first female dean of the college and the inaugural recipient of the Randall B. Terry Jr. College of Veterinary Medicine Endowed Dean’s Chair. Meurs takes the permanent position after serving as interim dean of the college since Jan. 18, following the departure of former dean Paul Lunn to become dean of the University of Liverpool School of Veterinary Science.
