Extraordinary Cancer Care for Long-Lived Companion Rusty the Corn Snake

A corn snake probably isn’t the first animal that comes to mind when most people think of getting a long-term pet companion, but Carter Lewis wouldn’t trade the 26 years she had with her Rusty for anything. The Petco Love and Blue Buffalo Cancer Treatment Fund helped Lewis get the best care possible for her companion.

With the Help of Petco and NC State, Laid-Back Jack is Wagging His Tail Again

Liz Massey’s Lab mix, Jack, benefitted from advanced veterinary technology and clinical expertise at NC State Veterinary Hospital with help from the Petco Love and Blue Buffalo Cancer Treatment Fund. Through a generous grant to NC State, the fund helps clients defray the cost of cancer treatment for animal companions with the hope that every case, regardless of the outcome, will lead researchers closer to a cure.

Ke Cheng Named Executive Director of Interdisciplinary Scholarship

Ke Cheng has been named executive director of interdisciplinary scholarship in the Office of University Interdisciplinary Programs, effective Oct. 1, 2022. In addition to being the Randall B. Terry, Jr. Distinguished Professor in Regenerative Medicine in the Department of Molecular Biomedical Sciences and Department of Biomedical Engineering, which will remain his primary appointment, he is also a University Faculty Scholar and a member of the Translational Regenerative Medicine cluster in the Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program.

Natasha Olby’s lab in the College of Veterinary Medicine is generating data and insights into the aging process in dogs, and how to improve their health span — not just their life span. Her research, which is fueled by the Dr. Kady M. Gjessing and Rahna M. Davidson Distinguished Chair in Gerontology, also has implications for human geriatric medicine.

CVM Provides Support During Natural Disasters

The College of Veterinary Medicine’s mobile veterinary hospital and Disaster Relief Fund help care for animals in the aftermath of natural disasters like hurricanes. Last year, the team was able to buy a new mobile hospital with more modern equipment thanks to donations made through the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Foundation.

In April, Dr. Kate Meurs became the dean of the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine following a nationwide search. Meurs is the first female dean of the college and the inaugural recipient of the Randall B. Terry Jr. College of Veterinary Medicine Endowed Dean’s Chair. Inhalable COVID-19 Vaccine Shows Promise in Rodent Model

Researchers have created an inhalable COVID-19 vaccine that is shelf-stable at room temperature for up to three months, targets the lungs specifically and effectively, and allows for self-administration via an inhaler. Ke Cheng, the Randall B. Terry Jr. Distinguished Professor in Regenerative Medicine at NC State, led the development of the vaccine prototype from proof-of-concept to animal studies.

An Investment in the Future of Large Animal Medicine

In their competitive and professional capacities, Bob and Jane DeMeulmester have taken advantage of the advanced expertise of the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine and Hospital. Those experiences have been so positive that the couple felt led to establish the Banixx Horse & Pet Care Graduate Award with an initial pledge of $20,000 to support the next generation of students focusing on large animal medicine.
