Miles Engell Receives 2023 Provost’s Award for Excellence in Teaching

The Provost’s Award for Excellence in Teaching is the most prestigious award given to professional full-time faculty from NC State’s 10 colleges and the University College. Miles Engell, a teaching professor in the College of Sciences, is known as an outstanding educator who engages and challenges students by applying real examples of animal behavior research to the topic addressed.

Two Faculty Win Holladay Medal

The Alexander Quarles Holladay Medal for Excellence was named in honor of NC State’s first professor of history and its first president. This year’s recipients are Drexel Professor Jerzy Bernholc, from the Department of Physics, and Mary Haskett, a professor in the Department of Psychology who is also known as a fierce advocate for under-resourced students.

A Landmark Gift for Graduate Students

A $10 million estate gift from John McRary to the College of Sciences is the largest estate gift in the history of the college and will support graduate students in physics and mathematics. To that end, the gift creates the John W. McRary Physics Graduate Support Endowment and the John W. McRary Mathematics Graduate Support Endowment.

A Welcoming Hand

NC State mathematics professor Chia Ven Pao helped hundreds of Chinese students transition from their home country to life in the U.S. during his time with the Pack. Now, some of those students have created a scholarship fund in his memory.

Hentz Made Chemistry Make Sense

Longtime NC State chemistry professor and inaugural recipient of the Holladay Medal Forrest C. Hentz died in December at the age of 89. The College of Sciences established the Forrest C. Hentz Jr. Scholarship Endowment following his retirement on June 30, 2002, and the family requests all memorials be directed to that or in the planting of a tree or flower in his memory.

Ke Cheng Named Executive Director of Interdisciplinary Scholarship

Ke Cheng has been named executive director of interdisciplinary scholarship in the Office of University Interdisciplinary Programs, effective Oct. 1, 2022. In addition to being the Randall B. Terry, Jr. Distinguished Professor in Regenerative Medicine in the Department of Molecular Biomedical Sciences and Department of Biomedical Engineering, which will remain his primary appointment, he is also a University Faculty Scholar and a member of the Translational Regenerative Medicine cluster in the Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program.

Mathematical Biologist Lloyd Named Associate Dean for Academic Affairs

Alun Lloyd, Drexel Professor of Mathematics, has been named as the College of Sciences’ associate dean for academic affairs. As associate dean, Lloyd will lead the college’s Office of Academic Affairs and oversee student-centered programming and engagement, curricula development and assessment, enrollment management, advising and scholarships, among other responsibilities.
