Mathematical Biologist Lloyd Named Associate Dean for Academic Affairs

Alun Lloyd, Drexel Professor of Mathematics, has been named as the College of Sciences’ associate dean for academic affairs. As associate dean, Lloyd will lead the college’s Office of Academic Affairs and oversee student-centered programming and engagement, curricula development and assessment, enrollment management, advising and scholarships, among other responsibilities.

College of Sciences Honors Outstanding Alumni and Student Achievements With 2022 Awards

The College of Sciences has recognized three alumni and two students with its annual awards for outstanding achievements and contributions. Among them is Dean Bunce ’86, recipient of the Zenith Medal for Service, whose advocacy throughout the Think and Do the Extraordinary Campaign and his service on the College of Sciences Foundation Board of Directors played a vital role in the college’s campaign success.

Minh-Thu Dinh is NC State’s 2022 Leader of the Pack

Electrical engineering major and Goodnight Scholar Minh-Thu Dinh received the award during NC State’s homecoming football game. Chemistry/science education major and Park Scholar Zachary VanHekken was also recognized for having the highest GPA among the finalists.

Physicist LeBlanc Wins $1.15M Chan Zuckerberg Science Diversity Leadership Award

Sharonda LeBlanc, an assistant professor in the Department of Physics, has received a Science Diversity Leadership Award from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. The five-year, $1.15 million grant will support LeBlanc’s project entitled “Time-resolved Molecular Mechanisms of Ribosome Assembly.”

Chemist Pierce Wins a Chancellor’s Innovation Fund Award

Professor and LORD Corporation Distinguished Scholar Joshua Pierce received one of six Chancellor’s Innovation Fund awards this year to continue his research on effective bacterial biofilms treatment. Pierce is also the head of NC State’s new Integrative Sciences Initiative, a cross-disciplinary effort at the university that will bring together students and faculty from all across its campuses to develop new solutions to society’s greatest challenges.

COMAP Gift to Science House and Data Science Academy to Support High School Students

A non-profit mathematics education organization has donated $60,000 to the Science House and the Data Science Academy at NC State to support high school programming that gets more students interested in data science. The gift from the Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications (COMAP) will provide rural and high-need schools with training, resources and support to participate in mini data challenges at NC State that lead to participation in national and international challenges such as the High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling.

Teen Wolfpack: Young Graduate Makes History

Sixteen-year-old Madhusudan Madhavan doesn’t yet have a North Carolina driver’s license, but he does have an undergraduate degree in applied mathematics with a minor in physics from NC State. The Cary teenager graduated this spring with a 4.0 GPA in just six semesters, plus a handful of classes in multiple summer sessions, thanks in part to the Gordon Family Scholarship.

Chemist Williams Named Head of Department of Chemistry

Chemist, professor and University Faculty Scholar Gavin Williams was recently named head of the College of Sciences’ Department of Chemistry. Williams, who is also a LORD Corporation Distinguished Scholar, joined NC State’s faculty in 2009 and went on to serve as associate head of the department and, since February 2021, interim department head. Among his many schievements thus far is his development of NC State’s first chemical biology course and his research into combining the power of biology and organic chemistry to provide access to new and complex organic molecules, as well as an innovative platform for drug discovery.
