Chemist Pierce Named Howard J. Schaeffer Distinguished Professor

The College of Sciences has named chemist Joshua Pierce as the Howard J. Schaeffer Distinguished Professor at NC State, a professorship that was made possible thanks to a gift from Burroughs Wellcome Company. Pierce is also executive director of NC State’s Integrative Sciences Initiative, where he is coordinating the design and realization of the Integrative Sciences Building and leading collaborative efforts to bring together scholars and students from biochemistry, biological sciences, chemistry, physics, engineering and biomedical sciences.

Chemist Xiao Named LORD Distinguished Scholar

The College of Sciences has named Yi Xiao, associate professor in the Department of Chemistry, as the Hugh C. Lord, LORD Corporation Distinguished Scholar at NC State. The distinguished professorship was made possible thanks to a gift from LORD Corporation. 

The late Ron Fodor, a former professor of geology, does field work in 2008.

Endowment Honoring Late Geologist Supports Geoscience Field-Based Opportunities

In his 41 years at NC State, the late geologist Ron Fodor made an impact on several generations of students. The Ron V. Fodor Endowment will further his legacy by supporting geoscience student research, travel and field-based experiences in the Department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences.

Brown Family Makes Transformational Gift

Computer Science alumnus and Hall of Fame inductee Tony McLean Brown and the Brown family recently made a $1 million pledge to the department to create a named distinguished professorship, a named graduate fellowship and a named undergraduate scholarship. The commitment was announced as part of NC State’s fifth annual Day of Giving, helping the Department of Computer Science set an all-time single-day giving record with total gifts and pledges exceeding $3.8 million.

Miles Engell Receives 2023 Provost’s Award for Excellence in Teaching

The Provost’s Award for Excellence in Teaching is the most prestigious award given to professional full-time faculty from NC State’s 10 colleges and the University College. Miles Engell, a teaching professor in the College of Sciences, is known as an outstanding educator who engages and challenges students by applying real examples of animal behavior research to the topic addressed.

Two Faculty Win Holladay Medal

The Alexander Quarles Holladay Medal for Excellence was named in honor of NC State’s first professor of history and its first president. This year’s recipients are Drexel Professor Jerzy Bernholc, from the Department of Physics, and Mary Haskett, a professor in the Department of Psychology who is also known as a fierce advocate for under-resourced students.
