Transformational Scholarships Program Announces Inaugural Cohort of Scholars

The College of Education has announced the 16 students from across eastern North Carolina who will join the inaugural cohort of the Transformational Scholarships Program, which is made possible by the generosity of the Anonymous Trust. These students, who will receive scholarships totaling $40,000 over four years, include club presidents, student government representatives, varsity athletes and volunteers, all dedicated to making their communities a better place.

NC State Project Promotes STEM Education at Dillard Drive Elementary

NC State professor Bethany Cutts recently led her students from the NR 203: Humans and Environment course in mentoring more than 100 second graders in learning about pollination, plants and ecosystems, and garden planting and maintenance. Funded through a grant from the Office of Diversity and Inclusion that was made possible by annual donors to the College of Natural Resources and from challenges won by the college on Day of Giving, the project aimed to provide Cutts’ students with an opportunity to interact with and mentor a diverse community partner and to provide opportunities for elementary students who do not typically have access to STEM programs.

Fitts-Woolard Hall Achieves LEED Silver for Sustainability

Fitts-Woolard Hall, home to the College of Engineering, has earned Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification at the Silver level. Made possible in large part by private funding, Fitts-Woolard Hall brings the total amount of LEED-certified space on campus to more than 1.5 million square feet.

The Libraries Announces Two Tom Regan Visiting Research Fellows for 2022

The NC State University Libraries has awarded 2022 Tom Regan Visiting Research Fellowships to Kat Poje, a Ph.D. candidate in the history of science at Harvard University, and Joshua Russell, an associate professor of animal behavior, ecology and conservation at Canisius College in Buffalo, New York. Intended to promote scholarly research in animal rights, the fellowship was established through the generosity of the Culture & Animals Foundation in memory of scholar, author and former NC State philosophy faculty member Tom Regan.

Inhalable COVID-19 Vaccine Shows Promise in Rodent Model

Researchers have created an inhalable COVID-19 vaccine that is shelf-stable at room temperature for up to three months, targets the lungs specifically and effectively, and allows for self-administration via an inhaler. Ke Cheng, the Randall B. Terry Jr. Distinguished Professor in Regenerative Medicine at NC State, led the development of the vaccine prototype from proof-of-concept to animal studies.

Delta Supports Development of New Textile Reverse-Engineering Course

Professor Jesse Jur, laboratory manager Amanda Mills and Ph.D. student Caitlin Knowles were recently awarded a DELTA Grant to create a new graduate-level online course focusing on the reverse engineering of textile products. The resulting TE 589: Design Analysis of Smart Textile Products was created and offered to students during the spring 2022 semester.

Introducing the 2026 Class of Textile Pioneer Scholars

The Textile Pioneer Scholarship provides funding for students based in non-metropolitan areas of North Carolina in alignment with NC State’s land-grant mission. As part of the program’s class of 2026, Olivia Masciarelli and Mackenzie Re will receive a minimum of $14,000 a year for four years, as well as $4,000 in enrichment funds that can be used for study abroad or other leadership and growth opportunities.

Engineering Alumni Establish New Endowment for Caldwell Fellows Program

Allison Anderson ’05 ’07 and David Anderson ’05 met during their time in the Caldwell Fellows Program. The program made such a significant impact on their lives that they have decided to establish a new named fund that will honor their time there as well as benefit other students.
