Park Class of 2023 Nominates Molly Barker for the 24th Annual William C. Friday Award

Molly Barker is an educator, triathlete, author and social visionary, as well as the founder of two nonprofit organizations. Nominated by the Park Scholarships program’s class of 2023 for her commitment to unraveling limiting cultural and societal stereotypes about gender, Barker will be presented with the William C. Friday Award on October 27 at 5:30 p.m. in Talley Student Union’s Piedmont Ballroom.

Chemist Pierce Wins a Chancellor’s Innovation Fund Award

Professor and LORD Corporation Distinguished Scholar Joshua Pierce received one of six Chancellor’s Innovation Fund awards this year to continue his research on effective bacterial biofilms treatment. Pierce is also the head of NC State’s new Integrative Sciences Initiative, a cross-disciplinary effort at the university that will bring together students and faculty from all across its campuses to develop new solutions to society’s greatest challenges.

A Little Help Goes a Long Way

Four NC State students were recently awarded the 2022-23 CALS Alumni and Friends Society Scholarship Endowment. Established in 2004, this endowed fund is awarded to CALS undergraduate and graduate students who show financial need as well as leadership potential, begetting grateful students who are even more motivated to reach their academic and career goals.

Chancellor’s Innovation Fund Awards Support to Five Promising Engineering Projects

Established in 2010 by NC State with the support of Chancellor Randy Woodson, the Chancellor’s Innovation Fund (CIF) awards up to $50,000 each year to support short-term, commercially focused research projects that have a high likelihood of market success and potential societal benefits. This year, thanks to the CIF, six more projects will receive seed funding and support from the Office of Research Commercialization.

Veronica Augustyn Named Inaugural Jake and Jennifer Hooks Distinguished Scholar

Professor Veronica Augustyn has been named the inaugural Jake and Jennifer Hooks Distinguished Scholar in Materials Science and Engineering, effective September 1. This important source of private support will further Augustyn’s research into materials for electrochemical energy and environmental applications, as well as the Hooks’ legacy of philanthropy at NC State.

COMAP Gift to Science House and Data Science Academy to Support High School Students

A non-profit mathematics education organization has donated $60,000 to the Science House and the Data Science Academy at NC State to support high school programming that gets more students interested in data science. The gift from the Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications (COMAP) will provide rural and high-need schools with training, resources and support to participate in mini data challenges at NC State that lead to participation in national and international challenges such as the High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling.

Poole Staff Spotlight: Meet Brian Clark

When Brian Clark got the phone call to come back to NC State after playing five seasons in the NFL, he jumped at the chance to join the Wolfpack again. After successfully leading the fundraising efforts for the Wolfpack Club, he joined Poole College of Management in 2020 as executive director of development and external relations, where he continues to connect donors with ways to make a difference.

Park Scholarships 2021-22 Annual Report

Last fiscal year, the Park Scholarships program celebrated an impressive array of milestones including the 25th anniversary of Service Raleigh, the fulfillment of the Krispy Kreme Challenge‘s $2 million commitment to the UNC Children’s hospital and the graduation of the 1,000th Park Scholar, as this annual report details.

Teen Wolfpack: Young Graduate Makes History

Sixteen-year-old Madhusudan Madhavan doesn’t yet have a North Carolina driver’s license, but he does have an undergraduate degree in applied mathematics with a minor in physics from NC State. The Cary teenager graduated this spring with a 4.0 GPA in just six semesters, plus a handful of classes in multiple summer sessions, thanks in part to the Gordon Family Scholarship.
