Chemist Williams Named Head of Department of Chemistry

Chemist, professor and University Faculty Scholar Gavin Williams was recently named head of the College of Sciences’ Department of Chemistry. Williams, who is also a LORD Corporation Distinguished Scholar, joined NC State’s faculty in 2009 and went on to serve as associate head of the department and, since February 2021, interim department head. Among his many schievements thus far is his development of NC State’s first chemical biology course and his research into combining the power of biology and organic chemistry to provide access to new and complex organic molecules, as well as an innovative platform for drug discovery.

Senior Vice Provost for Global Engagement Steps Down to Return to Faculty After 16 Years of Leadership

Senior Vice Provost for Global Engagement Bailian Li stepped down from his position and returned to the faculty in the College of Natural Resources effective August 15. NC State achieved many successes under Dr. Li’s leadership, including an incredible growth in the university’s study-abroad programming — programming that was greatly furthered through the generous support of NC State donors.

A Message From Dean Louis Martin-Vega

After 16 extraordinary years as the dean of the College of Engineering, Dr. Louis Martin-Vega has decided to step down in order to return to the faculty. The College of Engineering has seen unprecedented growth under Martin-Vega’s direction, including record-breaking fundraising in NC State’s Think and Do the Extraordinary Campaign and the opening of Fitts-Woolard Hall on Centennial Campus.

Meurs is the first female dean of the college and the inaugural recipient of the Randall B. Terry Jr. College of Veterinary Medicine Endowed Dean’s Chair. In this new video, Dean Meurs talks about her background, what it means to lead the college and her priorities as NC State continues to shape the future of veterinary medicine.

The future continues to be bright for fans of #Pack9, as Russ and Cara McLauchlan have committed $1 million to the Baseball Enhancement Fund. This is the fifth major commitment announced for the project that will impact NC State baseball’s competitive future while also significantly enhancing the spectator experience.

Trailblazer Profiles From Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research Share Stories of North Carolina Community College Leaders of Color

Twelve Black, Latin*, Asian and Indigenous leaders in the North Carolina Community College System recently shared their personal and career stories for the Trailblazer Profiles project, part of the Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research’s North Carolina Community College System History Project, to elevate and center the work of community college leaders of color in North Carolina. The idea for the project began in 2020 when Audrey Jaeger was awarded the W. Dallas Herring Professorship and, in collaboration with graduate students, began learning about Herring’s life through hundreds of boxes of information in the NC State archives.

Alora Wilson ’23 was one of several undergraduate and graduate students in the College of Education who had opportunities to engage in internships in North Carolina and across the country this summer. Wilson was selected for the College of Education Summer Internship Program, which is supported by gifts to the College of Education Excellence Fund in memory of Chantal Warfield, a 2019 graduate.
