Scholarship Support Helps Mariam Hernandez Vargas Share Passion for History in Classroom

Whether she’s learning about ancient civilizations, the United States or the Middle Ages, Mariam Hernandez Vargas has a passion for history. As a first-year student majoring in middle grades English language arts and social studies education, Vargas is looking forward to one day sharing her passion with her students as a teacher thanks to financial support from the Joe and Clary May Scholarship.

Two Outstanding Graduates Recognized With 2023 Distinguished Young Alumni Awards

The Wilson College of Textiles recently presented Devon Person ’10 and Monica Warsaw ’12 with its 2023 Distinguished Young Alumni Awards. Established in 2021 by the Dean’s Young Alumni Leadership Council (DYALC), the award program recognizes graduates under 40 who have made significant contributions to the textile industry and their communities. DYALC fosters engagement among young alumni and promotes the Wilson College of Textiles and the college’s fundraising arm, the North Carolina Textile Foundation.

Four Park Scholars March With the “World’s Most Dangerous Marching Band”

NC State’s marching band, The Power Sound of the South (also known as “the world’s most dangerous marching band”), performs at university events for student-athletes and fans. This year, there are four Park Scholars in the band — one from each program cohort.

Sydney Seymour is a three-time alumnus of the College of Engineering with 15 U.S. patents, one international patent and an international consulting company to his name. Despite all of this success, he continues to give back to what is important to him: helping train the next generation of engineers.

Three NC State Faculty Named AAAS Fellows

Three NC State faculty members, including Distinguished Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Sindee Simon, have been elected as Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). They are among 506 scientists, engineers and innovators to be honored this year by AAAS and will be recognized this spring at a gathering in Washington, D.C.

NC State’s Entrepreneurship Programs Named Among the Best in the South

NC State’s undergraduate and graduate entrepreneurship programs ranked No. 4 and No. 2 respectively for the South, and both were included in the top 25 programs overall. These rankings are based on a summer 2022 survey of more than 300 schools with offerings in entrepreneurship studies and are intended to give future entrepreneurs guidance on the best schools that can help them start their journey in entrepreneurship. Scholarships, the Albright Entrepreneurs Village and post-graduation mentorship and support programs such as the Andrews Launch Accelerator and Miller Fellowship help drive NC State Entrepreneurship forward.

Enduring Legacy

Chester Grant, NC State athletics’ first and, for the longest time, only Black employee, inspired generations of student-athletes as an athletic trainer, father figure and friend. The Chester A. Grant Athletic Trainer Scholarship, created in 2016 by former football player Jim Hipps and his wife, Kathleen Hipps, is named in his memory.

NC State to Explore a New Building for the Poole College of Management on Centennial Campus

NC State will commission a design study to establish the overall space needs, costs and location for a potential new building for the Poole College of Management, as announced at the university’s buildings and property committee meeting on Jan. 26. Following the completion of the study, college and university leadership will determine whether to continue the project. If the decision is made to continue, the next step would be to raise funds for the construction of the new building.

Generous Gift to the College of Natural Resources Will Fund International Studies for Forestry Students

Lee and Sunny Allen, educators who have dedicated the bulk of their academic lives and love to NC State, have created an endowment that will enable students to learn about ecosystems, wildlife and forestry operations around the world. The Allen International Travel Endowment provides support for undergraduate and/or graduate students pursuing a degree in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources who want to travel internationally — especially those traveling overseas for the first time.
