Veronica Augustyn Named Jake and Jennifer Hooks Distinguished Professor

This fall, NC State’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering named Veronica Augustyn as the Jake and Jennifer Hooks Distinguished Professor. Research in Augustyn’s group focuses on the electrochemistry of materials from fundamentals to applications in energy, environment, optics and electronics.

“Empty Pedestals: Countering Confederate Narratives Through Public Design” recently earned two major recognitions for its ability to bring design and planning strategies to confront and transform spaces marked by endemic prejudice. Tackling Ethical Questions About Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was approved by the FDA to treat some patients with depression in 2008 and has since been used in treatment plans for a variety of other health issues, but the increased use of TMS raises a number of ethical considerations. A new book co-edited by Veljko Dubljević, the Joseph D. Moore Distinguished Professor of Philosophy and Science, Technology and Society at NC State, addresses these and related questions.

How Hyper-Detailed Cameras Will Make Recycling More Efficient

A new study uses advanced imaging technology to identify materials in municipal solid waste that can be separated for recycling or to produce energy. Lokendra Pal, E.J. Woody Rice Professor and University Faculty Scholar in the Department of Forest Biomaterials at NC State, is a co-author of the study.

‘Re-Entrant’ Mixing Behavior in Organic Solar Cells Necessitates New Modeling Approach

In a new study, an international team of researchers including Harald Ade, Goodnight Innovation Distinguished Professor of Physics at NC State, created phase diagrams for organic solar cells based on a composite of a polymeric semiconductor and a “small molecule acceptor.” The work could accelerate the development of improved materials for use in high-efficiency solar cells.

Researchers including Milad Abolhasani, ALCOA Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at NC State, have unveiled a first-of-its-kind, multi-robot, self-driving laboratory that autonomously discovers high-performance quantum dots — semiconductor nanoparticles critical for next-generation displays, solar cells, LEDs and quantum-engineering technologies.
