Three from NC State Named Fellows of Inventors Academy

Three NC State innovators in the fields of food safety and computer networking have been recognized by the National Academy of Inventors: Rodolphe Barrangou, Todd R. Klaenhammer Distinguished Professor in Probiotics Research; Kenneth R. Swartzel, William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Department of Food, Bioprocessing and Nutrition Sciences; and Carlos Pignataro, an adjunct lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Jon Carr Discusses the Success of NC State Entrepreneurship

Jon Carr, Jenkins Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurship, was featured on WRAL during the On the Record segment to discuss the growth and success of entrepreneurship at NC State. NC State entrepreneurship start-ups have generated $1.2 billion in added income to the state economy and, currently, there are 31 start-up companies housed in the new NC State Entrepreneurship Garage.

Inspiring Tomorrow’s Leaders in Statistics

As part of efforts to inspire students and develop the next generation of women leaders in statistics, department head Len Stefanski has been using funds from his R.A. Fisher Distinguished Professorship endowment to send a group of women students to the annual Women in Statistics and Data Science (WSDS) conference for each of the past four years. This year, Eric Laber also funded a student’s attendance through his Goodnight Distinguished Professorship.

Hiller A. Spires, Alumni Distinguished Graduate Professor of Literacy Education, will serve as executive director of the NC State College of Education’s William and Ida Friday Institute for Educational Innovation and an associate dean of the college.

Statistician Laber Named Goodnight Distinguished Professor

The College of Sciences has named Eric Laber of the Department of Statistics as a Goodnight Distinguished Professor in Statistics. Laber, who joined the NC State faculty in 2011, focuses his research on data-driven decision making to advance areas like precision medicine, artificial intelligence and management of infectious diseases. And his lab uses innovative methods that apply data science to video games.

Molecular Toxicologist Smart Named Goodnight Distinguished Chair

The College of Sciences has named Rob Smart of the Department of Biological Sciences as the Goodnight Distinguished Chair in Molecular Toxicology. Smart, who joined the NC State faculty in 1986, researches the identification and characterization of genes and signaling pathways that determine susceptibility to cancer, particularly as it relates to gene-environment interactions. His lab also studies mechanisms by which environmental stressors induce skin cancer and how cells respond to DNA damage and tumor stress to decide to live or die.

Statistician Reich Named Cox Distinguished Professor

The College of Sciences has named Brian Reich of the Department of Statistics as the Gertrude M. Cox Distinguished Professor. Reich, who joined the NC State faculty in 2008, is well-known for his work on spatial statistics, extreme value analysis, variable selection and dimension reduction. He applies these methods to environmental areas such as ecology, air pollution and climate change, as well as to data from the physical and materials sciences.

Regenerative Medicine Visionary Cheng Receives Endowed Professorship

NC State College of Veterinary Medicine’s Ke Cheng, whose groundbreaking stem cell research has led to promising new ways to repair damaged hearts and lungs, was named the Randall B. Terry Jr. Distinguished Professor in Regenerative Medicine in a Nov. 4 ceremony. The professorship is made possible through the R.B. Terry Charitable Foundation.

Meentemeyer Named Goodnight Distinguished Professor of Geospatial Analytics

NC State’s College of Natural Resources announced that Ross K. Meentemeyer, director of the Center for Geospatial Analytics, has been appointed the Goodnight Distinguished Professor of Geospatial Analytics. Meentemeyer is a foundational member of the Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program’s geospatial analytics faculty cluster and a faculty member in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources. The professorship was made possible by a gift from longtime university supporters Jim and Ann Goodnight.

Morris Named William T. Kretzer Distinguished Professor

Irwin Morris, executive director of NC State’s School of Public and International Affairs, has been named William T. Kretzer Distinguished Professor. Established in 1999, the professorship helps the College of Humanities and Social Sciences maintain a position of national excellence and successfully compete with other universities for outstanding scholars. It is made possible through the generosity of Jim and Ann Goodnight and the C.D. Spangler Foundation.
