Ligler to Receive Honorary Degree

Frances Ligler, Lampe Distinguished Professor in the UNC/NC State Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering, will be awarded an honorary doctorate from Furman University at the university’s commencement ceremony May 5. Ligler received a B.S. in biology and chemistry from Furman in 1972. She went on to earn a D. Phil. in biochemistry, and a higher doctorate, the D.Sc., for her contributions to the field of biosensors, both from Oxford University.

$4.5 Million Bequest to Benefit NC State’s Applied Math Program

An anonymous couple has made a $4.5 million bequest to the College of Sciences Foundation to benefit students and faculty in applied mathematics. The gift commitment, one of the largest ever received by the college, will endow a distinguished faculty chair, an undergraduate scholarship fund and a graduate fellowship in the Department of Mathematics.

NC State Researchers Discover Bed Bug Histamines Are Substantial, Persistent in Infested Homes

A new study from from NC State postdoctoral researcher Zachary DeVries and colleagues shows much higher histamine levels in homes infested by bed bugs than in pest-free homes – and that these histamine levels persist for months, even if the bugs have been eliminated. Coby Schal, Blanton J. Whitmire Professor of Entomology, co-authored the paper along with research specialist Richard Santangelo.

NC State Physicist Elected as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science

John Thomas, the John S. Risley Distinguished Professor in NC State's Department of Physics, received one of the nation’s most prestigious scientific honors “for groundbreaking contributions to the study of ultra-cold atomic Fermi gases, in particular measurements of the equation of state and of transport properties." He is among 396 scientists to be honored this year by AAAS.

Narayan Effort Recognized through R&D 100 Awards
