9,000 Students and Counting

Students who enroll in Entomology 201 to fulfill a science requirement don’t expect such a memorable class, but Clyde Sorenson — a three-time Wolfpack alumnus, a donor and a distinguished professor — has been perfecting his delivery over 27 years of teaching at NC State. Sorenson was recently featured on the NC State Philanthropy Podcast to detail his extraordinary contributions to his alma mater.

Memorial Professorship Established in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering

Tom Clausi passed away earlier this year at the age of 80 and according to his son, Nick Clausi ’94, was a loyal member of the Wolfpack his entire life. Nick and his wife, Rebecca ’95, have generously initiated the endowment of the Thomas M. Clausi Professorship in Chemical Engineering in Tom’s memory.

Autonomous Lab Discovers Best-In-Class Quantum Dot

Researchers have developed an autonomous system that can identify how to synthesize “best in class” materials for specific applications in hours or days rather than the years it might have taken humans. Felix Castellano, Goodnight Innovation Distinguished Chair in Chemistry at NC State, is a co-author of the paper.

Private Support Leads to Public Benefits in the College of Engineering

A distinguished professorship is helping Yong Zhu create electronic devices using nanomaterials that can monitor people’s — and even plants’ — health. That is just the tip of the iceberg, though, when it comes to how this funding furthers his work at NC State.

Poop, Pee and Microbes: The Complicated Ecology of Pit Latrines

A new study sheds light on the complex microbial ecosystems found in pit latrines, which are used by billions of people around the world. Francis de los Reyes — Glenn E. and Phyllis J. Futrell Distinguished Professor of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering — is a corresponding author of a paper on the work.
