Jingxin Wang Named Reuben B. Robertson Professor

Jingxin Wang, professor and head of the Department of Forest Biomaterials in the College of Natural Resources, has been awarded the Reuben B. Robertson Professorship. Wang is the fifth faculty member to receive the professorship since it was established in 1953 to honor Reuben B. Robertson, an industry leader and former chairman of the board of Champion who was instrumental in providing support for the beginning of the paper science and engineering program.

NC State Receives NSF Grant to Establish the Center for Accelerated Photocatalysis

The National Science Foundation (NSF) recently announced that NC State will direct a center that deploys self-driving labs to accelerate discovery for reactions which use light as a catalyst in challenging chemical transformations. The NSF Center for Accelerated Photocatalysis (CAPs) is supported by an NSF Centers for Chemical Innovation Program Phase I grant, totaling $1.8 million over the next three years.

Catalyzing Creative Concepts to Solve Commercial Challenges

The Chancellor’s Innovation Fund (CIF) has selected six more research projects to support this year, including several led by distinguished professors. Starting in 2023, thanks to the generosity of local entrepreneur Bill Spruill, researchers selected for CIF support also gain resources and counsel from Spruill’s 2ndF Research Commercialization Fund.

NC State Joins National Energy Innovation Hub, Boosting Battery Research

The U.S. Department of Energy recently announced a $62.5 million grant supporting a new energy research hub involving 15 research institutions, including NC State, to advance sustainable and economical electrochemical energy storage for electric grids. Jake and Jennifer Hooks Distinguished Scholar and Professor Veronica Augustyn from NC State’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) is a co-principal investigator and will play a key role in this groundbreaking initiative. MSE alumnus Jake Hooks and his wife, Jennifer, recently donated $50,000 during the 2024 Day of Giving to support the future establishment of an Advanced Battery Materials Center on the NC State campus, further positioning the university as a leader in battery research.

CHASS Names Inaugural Mattocks Distinguished Professor in Nonprofit Leadership

Hans Peter Schmitz has been appointed the inaugural Bob and Carol Mattocks Distinguished Professor in Nonprofit Leadership for the Department of Public Administration in the School of Public and International Affairs. This distinguished professorship will support Schmitz as he teaches courses and conducts research focused on the work and social impact of nonprofits in local or global communities.

Award-Winning Nolan the Recipient of Distinguished Professorship in Oncology

Mike Nolan, professor of radiation oncology and biology in the College of Veterinary Medicine, has been awarded the Randall B. Terry Jr. Distinguished Professorship in Oncology. The endowed professorship is the result of a $1 million donation from the R.B. Terry Charitable Foundation along with $500,000 from the college’s Distinguished Professors Endowment Trust Fund.

For First Time, DNA Tech Offers Both Data Storage and Computing Functions

Researchers from North Carolina State University and Johns Hopkins University have demonstrated a technology capable of a suite of data storage and computing functions that uses DNA rather than conventional electronics. Goodnight Distinguished Scholar at NC State Albert Keung and Orlin Velev, S. Frank and Doris Culberson Distinguished Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at NC State, were co-authors.
