A Coffee Shop with a Purpose

Four Park Scholars in the Class of 2021 have started pop-up shop 321 Coffee, staffed by individuals with intellectual and developmental disorders. According to Lindsay Wrege, CEO, the organization is meant "to provide meaningful volunteer work experience for adults with special needs, as well as a space for the NC State and Raleigh [populace] to interact with the special-needs community."

Park Scholar Lands Job with the Federal Reserve

Madeline Finnegan will continue her involvement with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York full-time after she graduates in May. Last summer, the NC State Park Scholar worked there as a summer research analyst, contributing as part of the financial intermediation team.

Casey Sokolovic ’19 and Help Them LAST – Love a Sea Turtle

Park Scholar and marketing major Casey Sokolovic started a fundraiser for sea turtles when she was eight years old. She later combined her passion for turtles and the environment with a passion to help young people, creating an organization that runs youth summer camps, beach cleanups, water quality testing and other activities that connect kids to unique learning opportunities in her hometown of Greenville.

Felton Receives Prestigious Marshall Scholarship

Park Scholar Kobi Felton -- an honors chemical and biomolecular engineering major with a minor in Spanish who also is a member of the University Scholars Program -- is NC State's third recipient of a Marshall Scholarship. The 2018 awards are being presented to 43 Americans chosen based on academic merit, leadership potential and ambassadorial potential to receive funding to pursue postgraduate study in the United Kingdom.

Two Anonymous Gifts Boost Park Scholarships

The Park Scholarships has received two anonymous donations totaling $700,000 this year to provide significant support for the program and its students. The assistance comes from families deeply entrenched in the Park community.

Surviving the Shark Tank

Park Scholar alumnus Steven Mazur nearly came up short when he braved ABC-TV’s Shark Tank in late October in search of a $100,000 investment in his Detroit company, which sells clothes for men 5-foot-8 and under. But he and business partner Eric Huang wound up with more than they asked for. And it came from the tallest investor in the tank: Mark Cuban, the 6-foot-3 owner of the NBA's Dallas Mavericks.

Students Start Business To Tackle Textile Waste

NC State Park Scholars Emily Neville and Carly Kvietok have created a company, Reborn Clothing Co., to transform clothing items that people no longer wear -- especially those sentimental ones in the back of the closet -- into new products. The company, guided by several College of Textiles professors and the Entrepreneurship Initiative, aims to help reduce textile waste, which is a 25.5-billion-pound problem annually in the United States.

College of Education Student Recognized by Statewide Group

Ashley Lawson has won the 2017 North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCCTM) Outstanding Mathematics Education Student Award. A Park Scholar, Lawson planned to major in mechanical engineering because of her talents in math and science. When she realized she had a passion for helping others, she changed course to a double major in mathematics and mathematics education.
