Honoring Dr. CV Pao’s Legacy and His Impact on International Students

During his 40 years as a mathematics professor at NC State, Dr. Chia Ven Pao left a lifelong impact on both the academic performance and the later personal and professional development of so many international students, particularly those from China. Now, a group of alumni are leading an effort to establish an endowment to honor Dr. Pao’s legacy by providing financial support for future international students at NC State.

The World Comes Home to NC State

After a tumultuous 2020-21 school year, NC State Global is preparing to send more students to study abroad, welcoming international students to campus, meeting face-to-face (with masks) for global events and learning together again. Study abroad scholarships have benefited greatly from the Think and Do the Extraordinary Campaign.

Schmidt Retires from Global Engagement Team

Ingrid Schmidt, associate vice provost for external relations and development in the Office of Global Engagement, retired from NC State earlier this month after 25 years of service. Schmidt held several important roles and made significant contributions to advance global education at NC State, from overseeing tremendous growth in study abroad to laying the groundwork for the division’s fundraising and development.

Hanley-Bowdoin Honored with 2021 Jackson Rigney International Service Award

The Jackson Rigney International Service Award recognizes the distinguished contributions of a faculty or staff member for the promotion of international understanding and service to the university and/or to the international community over the course of their career. The award honors the memory of Rigney, an agronomist who served NC State for 40 years by bringing a global perspective to his life and work. Linda Hanley-Bowdoin, William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor in plant and microbial biology, is a world expert on geminiviruses, and her work is having a significant impact on combating world food insecurity.

2021 Day of Giving: A Successful Day For Our Global Pack

As part of NC State’s record-setting Day of Giving last month, in a joint outreach effort, the Office of Global Engagement’s units raised $7,840.94 for the International Student Support Fund through 66 generous gifts and $5,515.64 for the Study Abroad Fund through 45 thoughtful contributions. These donations enable students to think and do globally both abroad in the world and here at home.

NC State Global Receives Memorial Gift in Honor of Dr. Dmitri Zaykin

Family, friends and former colleagues are making gifts to NC State’s International Student Support Fund in memory of Dmitri Zaykin, who passed away in December. Zaykin, born and raised in Russia, was an international alumnus of the class of 1999, earning his Ph.D. in biomathematics.

Ingrid Schmidt is the associate vce provost and director for external relations and development for the Office of Global Engagement. Schmidt develops and maintains important relationships with alumni, the community and donors for the purpose of unit advancement, global student internship development and external advisory board support.

Gilman Scholarship Supports Study Abroad Experiences

Four NC State students were recently selected to receive the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad or intern abroad this fall. Spain and Tanzania are among the places the students will think and do during the semester.

2019-20 Internationalization Seed Grants Announced

Supported in part by private giving, the Office of Global Engagement recently awarded six NC State faculty with 2019-20 Internationalization Seed Grants. These funds - up to $5,000 per grant - promote international partnerships and foster global scholarship and engagement.
