College of Sciences Honors 2024-25 LeRoy and Elva Martin Award Recipients

Logan Opperman, assistant teaching professor in the Department of Statistics, and Arianna Soldati, assistant professor in the Department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, have been honored by the College of Sciences with the 2024-25 LeRoy and Elva Martin Award for Teaching Excellence. The Martin Award recognizes the outstanding contributions of early career faculty to the College of Sciences’ teaching mission and was created in 2001 by the late LeRoy Martin Jr., a longtime mathematics professor at NC State, to honor his parents.

Legendary Chemistry Professor Bumgardner Passes Away at 100

The NC State community lost a longtime member on Feb. 24 when Chemistry Professor Emeritus Carl Bumgardner passed away. Bumgardner taught at NC State for more than 40 years and established the Ann Bumgardner and Myrtle Bumgardner Scholarship to benefit students in the Department of Chemistry.

Jason Bocarro, the Owens-Shelton Distinguished Professor for Leadership with a Global Perspective, has been named as the recipient of the 2023 UNC Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching. The honor is the university system’s most prestigious teaching award, recognizing and encouraging faculty’s extraordinary teaching contributions.

Miles Engell Receives 2023 Provost’s Award for Excellence in Teaching

The Provost’s Award for Excellence in Teaching is the most prestigious award given to professional full-time faculty from NC State’s 10 colleges and the University College. Miles Engell, a teaching professor in the College of Sciences, is known as an outstanding educator who engages and challenges students by applying real examples of animal behavior research to the topic addressed.
