2021-22 University Faculty Scholars Named

NC State recently announced its 2021-22 class of University Faculty Scholars. These 23 early- and mid-career faculty members received this designation in recognition of their outstanding academic achievements and contributions to NC State through their teaching, scholarship and service to the university and beyond.

Debbie Acker Appointed Director of Shelton Leadership Center

Debbie Acker, interim director of NC State’s Shelton Leadership Center (SLC), has been named permanent director of the center following the retirement of Barbara Mulkey. Formerly the SLC’s senior associate director for operations and academic programs, Acker will continue working to inspire, educate and develop values-based leaders in her new role.

Morrison Named College of Sciences Assistant Dean for Advancement

Tina Morrison has been named the new assistant dean for advancement at the College of Sciences, following a national search. As assistant dean for advancement, Morrison will serve as the lead fundraiser for the college and oversee the daily operations of the Advancement Office, including supervising staff, managing budgets and setting fundraising goals. She will also serve as president of the College of Sciences Foundation, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that promotes the educational, research and service programs of the college. She joins the college from the NC State University Libraries, where she recently led fundraising efforts as executive director for development.

Making Her Mark: Wei Gao Honored as University Scholar

Wei Gao, associate professor of textile engineering, chemistry and science (TECS) in the Wilson College of Textiles, was recently named a University Faculty Scholar in NC State’s 2021 class, joining 20 other early- and mid-career faculty who received this designation. The honor recognizes outstanding academic achievements and contributions to NC State through their teaching, scholarship and service to the university and beyond.

NC State’s Board of Trustees recently welcomed three new members and three reappointed members, along with electing officers for 2021-22.

Acker Named Interim Director of the Shelton Leadership Center

Debbie Acker, senior associate director for operations and academic programs at the Shelton Leadership Center (SLC), has been named the center’s interim director, effective May 1. She will replace Barbara Mulkey, who is retiring. Acker has served in her current position since March 2019 and has been part of the center and its programs since its inception in 2003. In her role, she is responsible for managing SLC operations for all budgets and providing supervision over program areas. She assists the director with oversight of the SLC’s board of advisors, fund development and special projects related to grants and contracts.

Sisterhood Celebration Provides Reflections on ‘Normal Never Was’

This year’s NC State Sisterhood Celebration brought together nearly 250 members of the campus community to celebrate the achievements of women while acknowledging the challenges and hardships of the past year. The celebration, with a theme based on the writings of poet, activist and author Sonya Renee Taylor, was sponsored by the Council on the Status of Women and the Women’s Center. Learn more about the event and the Equity Award for Women nominees, which included University Advancement’s Christina Walker. Walker was recognized for her work leading the establishment of the Wolfpack Women in Philanthropy.

New Program Drives Research and Training in Chemistry and Life Sciences

A new program led by the College of Sciences is bringing together 40 faculty from across NC State to focus on innovative research and training at the intersection of chemistry and life sciences. The Chemistry of Life program will seed innovative, interdisciplinary research projects in molecular-focused areas ranging from synthetic chemistry and synthetic biology to chemical biology and biochemistry. Joshua Pierce, LORD Corporation Distinguished Scholar and associate professor of chemistry, led its development.
