Geneticist Mackay Named Goodnight Innovation Distinguished Chair

The College of Sciences announced the honor for Trudy Mackay, a prominent geneticist who joined the NC State faculty in 1987. Her groundbreaking work focuses on the genetic and environmental factors affecting variation in complex traits, characteristics that can be tied to one or more genes in an organism. Her signature project is the Drosophila Genetic Reference Panel, a collection of more than 200 fruit fly lines that hundreds of researchers around the world use in their work.

Physicist Ade Named Goodnight Innovation Distinguished Professor

The College of Sciences announced the honor for Harald Ade, a prominent physicist who joined the NC State faculty in 1992. He has received international attention for his interdisciplinary work on understanding the physics of organic solar cells and light-emitting diodes, creating novel devices, and inventing and using new characterization methods with an emphasis on applications to organic devices.

Researchers Release First Chemical Map of Dyes From Historic Dye Library

NC State faculty have released the first chemical “map” of dyes from the Max A. Weaver Dye Library, which contains almost 100,000 samples of unique dyes and fabrics and was donated to the university by Eastman Chemical Co. in 2014. The information could assist researchers in developing dyes with desirable properties.

Oliver-Hoyo, Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Professor of Chemistry at NC State, is so fascinated by the teaching of chemistry that she has become a leading light in the study of chemistry education — and she’s so good at it that she was recently named a winner of the 2017 Excellence in Teaching Award from the UNC system Board of Governors.
