Lokendra Pal, the EJ Woody Rice Professor in the College of Natural Resources’ Department of Forest Biomaterials, is working with his collaborators to develop a “smart waste management system” for the collection, identification and characterization of organic materials in non-recyclable waste.

Forestry Alum’s Legacy Honored at Slocum Camp

Brady Johnson, a 1998 graduate of the Poole College of Management, recently donated funds to the College of Natural Resources to name the newly renovated dining hall at Slocum Camp after his grandfather J. Baxter Johnson Jr., who graduated from the College of Natural Resources in 1948. The dedication honors a major figure in Johnson’s life and recognizes his family’s shared love for NC State while also providing for the forestry students who spend six to nine weeks each summer learning at the camp.

Haley Jenkins Analyzes Sustainable Wood Products

Haley Jenkins is a junior majoring in sustainable materials and technology in the College of Natural Resources, as well as a recipient of the Natural Resources Foundation Alumni Scholarship Award and the Wilson Family Scholarship. This summer, Jenkins served as an undergraduate research assistant with the wood science and engineering program at Oregon State, a multidisciplinary university program focused on science, technology and engineering.

Jenna Abrahamson is a Ph.D. student in the Center for Geospatial Analytics and a recipient of the NC State University Graduate Research Fellowship. This summer, she worked remotely for the Pacific Northwest National Lab as a Ph.D. intern on its terrestrial and aquatic integration team under the Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate.

NC State to Lead $10M Initiative to Decarbonize Forest Products Industry

A group of researchers from the NC State Department of Forest Biomaterials has been selected to lead a $10 million, public-private research initiative aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the forest products industry. Lokendra Pal, the EJ Woody Rice Professor and a University Faculty Scholar in the Department of Forest Biomaterials at NC State, will lead the effort.

Charles Allen Sanders ’85 Named Executive Director of Pulp and Paper Advisory Board

Sanders, an alumnus of the College of Natural Resources’ paper science and engineering program, brings more than 30 years in the paper industry to the board. In his new role, he will serve as an interface between the advisory board and corporate and individual contributors, manage day-to-day activities of the board, work to establish goals and objectives to grow the endowment and assist in alumni communications.

For NC State junior Tylene Powell, the support that she’s received from scholarships has been vital to her academic success. Powell, who is majoring in sport management at the College of Natural Resources, received the Natural Resources Foundation Scholarship during her freshman year and then the Jack “Swede” Frauson Sports Management Scholarship and the Wayne Williamson and Bette Rose Scholarship Endowment in Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management.
