Sunkyu Park Named Jordan Family Distinguished Professor

The College of Natural Resources (CNR) has appointed Sunkyu Park as the Jordan Family Distinguished Professor for Natural Resource Innovation. A professor in the Department of Forest Biomaterials, Park is the fourth faculty member to receive the professorship, which was established through a generous gift from CNR alumni Robert B. Jordan III, Jack P. Jordan, Genie Jordan Ussery and Robert B. Jordan IV.

Researchers Turn to Cottonseed Oil to Replace Toxic Chemicals in Textiles, Paper Products

With a $294,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, NC State professors Richard Venditti and Sunkyu Park are exploring the potential of using cottonseed oil to create non-allergenic, biodegradable products that can be used as finishing agents for cotton apparel and wet-strength agents for paper. Venditti is also the Elis-Signe Olsson Professor of Pulp and Paper Science and Engineering at the College of Natural Resources.

Annual CNR Celebration Brings Donors and Scholarship Recipients Together

This spring, donors and the students they support gathered to celebrate the power of philanthropy at the 2024 Trailblazing Donor Appreciation Brunch. The interactive event, held at the Dail Club at Carter-Finley Stadium, featured just a few of the many hands-on experiences students gain throughout their time in the College of Natural Resources.

WestRock Endows Graduate Award in Honor of Peter Hart

Corrugated packing company WestRock recently pledged up to $50,000 in matching funds to help establish a scholarship for graduate students studying paper science and engineering in the Department of Forest Biomaterials. The Dr. Peter W. Hart Graduate Student Award honors its namesake’s exceptional contributions to the industry in 30 years with WestRock, most recently as senior director of research, and his work with NC State’s students.

Four Faculty Members Win Outstanding Research Award, Induction to Research Leadership Academy

Four NC State faculty members, including several distinguished professors, won the university’s top award for research and mentorship in 2024, highlighting their exceptional contributions to their respective fields. The Outstanding Research Award recognizes faculty who lead in their areas of expertise; empower the success of their fellow NC State faculty; and advance an intellectual, multidisciplinary research community.

Sassorossi Family Establishes Scholarship for Paper Science Majors

Deanna and Sarah Sassorossi began to dream about giving back to the College of Natural Resources long before their graduation in 2016 and 2017, respectively. That dream has since grown from small gifts to an endowed scholarship in support of NC State’s Day of Giving 2024.

NC State Couple Donates Land for Natural Resources Education

When Tom and Priscilla Terry decided to donate 138 acres along Broad Creek to NC State, they gave a gift designed to keep on giving to students interested in learning about and managing our natural resources for generations to come. The Terrys also included a provision guaranteeing that if the property is ever sold, the proceeds of that sale will go toward an existing scholarship fund in the College of Natural Resources that the Terrys created a few years ago.

Exchange Program Promotes Positive Youth Development Through Sports

Empowering New Voices through Education and Sport Training, or ENVEST, is a cultural exchange program that aims to improve the capacity of coaches to implement youth soccer programs that increase leadership skill development and promote respect for differences and inclusion among participants. Jason Bocarro, the Owens-Shelton Distinguished Professor of Leadership with a Global Perspective at NC State, is a co-director of the program.
