Ligler to Receive Honorary Degree

Frances Ligler, Lampe Distinguished Professor in the UNC/NC State Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering, will be awarded an honorary doctorate from Furman University at the university’s commencement ceremony May 5. Ligler received a B.S. in biology and chemistry from Furman in 1972. She went on to earn a D. Phil. in biochemistry, and a higher doctorate, the D.Sc., for her contributions to the field of biosensors, both from Oxford University.

Dr. H. Christopher Frey, the Glenn E Futrell Distinguished University Professor in NC State's Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering, continues to collaborate on innovative air quality research and education with several Ph.D. students whom he has advised.

Gates Foundation Grant Benefits Work Addressing Global Sanitation Issues

Dr. Francis de los Reyes of the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering — who leads NC State's global water sanitation and hygiene faculty cluster — received $1.2 million from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to improve and test the market for a novel pit latrine emptying device, the Flexcrevator. The Flexcrevator is the newest generation of a series of prototypes, with the first design invented by NC State alumnus Tate Rogers.

Solar Vehicle Team Project Takes Unusual Route, Adding Business Students

A team of more than 40 undergraduate and graduate students from NC State's colleges of engineering, design and management are designing a solar car focusing on practicality, performance and energy efficiency. Corporate sponsors, including Toshiba, Geo Renewables, Imagineering and Autodesk, are among the project's supporters.

Ekkad Named R.J. Reynolds Professor

Dr. Srinath Ekkad has been named the R.J. Reynolds Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at NC State. Named head of the department last year, Ekkad has published more than 90 articles in peer-reviewed journals, contributed to four book chapters and wrote the book, “Gas Turbine Heat Transfer and Cooling Technology.”

Senior Design Program Focuses on Real-World Engineering

For more than 50 years, the concept of "learn by doing" has driven the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering (BAE) senior design program – and has produced results that have benefited industry, local government and communities across the state. “Our students come in and they learn a lot of technology, and that’s good,” says Mike Boyette, Philip Morris Professor of Biological and Agricultural Engineering, who has led the program since 2001. “But they also need to know how to apply it. That’s critical."

Alumnus Junji Kawabe, a Franklin Bost Industrial Design Fellowship recipient during his time in the College of Design, recently received an iF Design Award Gold.
