Praxair Champions College of Engineering

Praxair, one of the world’s leading industrial gas producers, is among the biggest supporters of programs including Women in Engineering and the college's Minority Engineering Programs. Praxair and NC State have collaborated on sustainability efforts, graduate research symposiums, Ph.D. recruitment weekends and scholarship funding. Now, the firm is sponsoring a student innovation lounge that will be located on the second floor of the new Fitts-Woolard Hall.

Meet the 2018 Miller Fellows

Seven young innovators have been chosen as 2018 Miller Fellows. The program (which also honors Dr. Tom Miller, senior vice provost for academic outreach and entrepreneurship) provides financial support and other opportunities to NC State student entrepreneurs who commit to developing their startups full-time in the six months following graduation.

Knappe Named S. James Ellen Jr. Distinguished Professor of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering

Dr. Detlef Knappe, who joined the NC State faculty in 1996, has been named the S. James Ellen Jr. Distinguished Professor of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering. Knappe has conducted research on water treatments for 25 years and is a recognized leader in the field.

Ready for Her Space Flight

NC State alumna and NASA astronaut Christina Hammock Koch is getting ready for her first trip to space. Koch -- who spoke at last fall's Red and White Night: A Celebration of Philanthropy -- will serve as a flight engineer on a mission set to launch to the International Space Station in April 2019.

Alumna Continues Her Support of the College of Engineering

Rashida Hodge is one of the youngest College of Engineering alumni to establish a scholarship, and she recently pledged to support construction on Fitts-Woolard Hall. Her philanthropy is motivated by furthering the mission of the university that helped launch her career and by inspiring young female and African-American engineers.

College of Engineering Mourns Loss of Dean Emeritus

Dr. Nino A. Masnari, distinguished professor of electrical and computer engineering and dean emeritus of the College of Engineering at NC State, passed away May 19. His long list of academic and leadership accomplishments included increasing philanthropic support for the college, and Masnari and his wife, Judy, also endowed a scholarship for engineering undergraduates. In 2006 the college named the main entrance to the engineering building cluster on Centennial Campus the Nino A. Masnari Engineering Gateway in recognition of “his many contributions to educational and research program development ... and for vision and leadership in moving the College of Engineering to Centennial Campus.”

A Wolfpack Family Gives Back

Dr. Tony Sigmon and his wife, Nancy -- along with their children and children’s spouses -- have invested in the College of Engineering’s Fitts-Woolard Hall, as well as other college and NC State initiatives. Sigmon, founder and corporate president of Raleigh-based Collegiate Capital Management, received his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in engineering science and mechanics from the college. And there are many more family ties.

NC State’s Ruben Carbonell Receives UNC System’s O. Max Gardner Award

Ruben Carbonell, NC State's Frank Hawkins Kenan Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering, has been honored with the O. Max Gardner Award for his contributions in engineering, health care, education and public policy. The award is the most significant universitywide honor given to faculty by the University of North Carolina System.
