College of Education to Establish Goodnight Distinguished Professorship in Early Literacy

NC State’s College of Education is establishing the Goodnight Distinguished Professorship in Early Literacy thanks to a gift from longtime NC State supporters Dr. Jim and Mrs. Ann Goodnight. The professorship will support the activities of a professor who focuses on teaching the science of reading in early literacy.

Join the College of Education March 2 for the first part of its new Linguistic Diversity Speaker Series, organized by Goodnight Distinguished Professor in Educational Equity Maria Coady. Professor Emerita Kathy Escamilla, who is widely regarded as a foremost thought leader on biliteracy development for multilingual learners, will be the guest speaker.

Scholarship Support Helps Mariam Hernandez Vargas Share Passion for History in Classroom

Whether she’s learning about ancient civilizations, the United States or the Middle Ages, Mariam Hernandez Vargas has a passion for history. As a first-year student majoring in middle grades English language arts and social studies education, Vargas is looking forward to one day sharing her passion with her students as a teacher thanks to financial support from the Joe and Clary May Scholarship.

NC State’s Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research has launched an effort to help create a pipeline to develop community college leaders from underrepresented communities. The cornerstone of that effort is the Trailblazer Profiles, highlighting the accomplishments of past and present North Carolina community college presidents and system leaders who are Black, Asian, Native American or Latinx.

How Can Educators Help Linguistically Diverse Students in Rural Schools?

No matter where an educator teaches, they are likely to encounter students who are multilingual, but not all educators are equipped with the skills or tools required to adequately meet the needs of these students. This is particularly true, said Goodnight Distinguished Professor in Educational Equity Maria Coady, in rural areas where resources may be limited.

Each year, the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation selects graduate students to become Friday Institute Graduate Student Fellows. The 2022 class of fellows are researching topics that focus on increasing equity in STEM education and educating students and families about wildlife science.
