College of Design Secures First Distinguished Professorship with Support From the Goodnights

The College of Design has named Wayne Place as its inaugural Goodnight Distinguished Professor in Architecture. The professorship was made possible by a gift from longtime NC State supporters Dr. Jim and Mrs. Ann Goodnight.

The K-12 Digital Design Lab: Thriving Through Adaptation

Thanks to funding from NC Modernist Houses, an organization dedicated to connecting the public with design resources in North Carolina, the College of Design’s Design Lab field trip program has been thriving since 2013. Design Camp, which supports a few of its attendees each year through the Marvin and Cindy Malecha Dream Scholarship Fund, and Digital Design Camp are other programs through which the college introduces its disciplines to young people.

Kofi Boone Announced as Joseph D. Moore Distinguished Professor

The College of Design has named Kofi Boone, FASLA, professor of landscape architecture and environmental planning, as the Joseph D. Moore Distinguished Professor. Boone has been at the College of Design since 2004. His work is in the overlap between landscape architecture and environmental justice with specializations in democratic design, digital media and interpreting cultural landscapes.

Early Champions for the New Design Center

As renovations for the Design Center at 111 Lampe Drive continue to progress, students are preparing to utilize the blank spaces for fall 2021. One company, Eastman, recently pledged a major gift to become the first partner to name a space in the new facility.

Landscape Architecture Professor Lewis Clarke Passes Away at 94

Lewis Clarke, FASLA, passed away on June 6, 2021. Clarke catalyzed the evolution of American landscape architecture for more than 65 years as a professor at the North Carolina State University School (now College) of Design and as a visiting lecturer at numerous universities. Through nearly five decades of active practice, his achievements were multi-faceted, award-winning and historically significant. His contributions endure through donated papers and drawings at NC State University Libraries’ Special Collections Research Center.

Day of Giving 2021 Breaks Records for College of Design Fundraising

The College of Design had its most successful Day of Giving yet on March 24. Throughout the 24-hour period, it raised a total of $1,349,683 from 309 gifts, supporting scholarships, facilities, students, staff and faculty throughout the college.

Students Virtually Explore Rome Through New Lecture Series

The College of Design recently received a generous donation to fund a new study-abroad experience in Rome, Italy, for spring 2021. COVID-19 prevented an in-person experience from taking place, but that setback prompted the college to offer a virtual experience that brings increased accessibility to all.
