Jameel Receives UNC System Award for Excellence in Teaching

Hasan Jameel of the NC State College of Natural Resources has been honored with the 2021 UNC Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching. Created by the board in 1993, the award recognizes and encourages the extraordinary teaching contributions of faculty across the UNC System. Jameel, the Jordan Family Distinguished Professor for Natural Resource Innovation in the Department of Forest Biomaterials, is one of 17 recipients representing all 16 of North Carolina’s public universities and the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics.

Introducing New Goodnight Scholars Program Assistant Director Anthony Olaiya Wright

The Goodnight Scholars Program recently welcomed a new assistant director, Anthony Olaiya Wright. In this role, he will be responsible for program communications, recruitment and the ambassador program, as well as co-teaching a first-year seminar and planning/leading student travel opportunities.

Leaving a Legacy

Peter Wilson and his wife, Trish, parents of three including two NC State alumni, had plans to create a scholarship at the Poole College of Management to help economically disadvantaged, underrepresented minority students studying accounting by providing scholarships for the last two years of their education. Following Peter’s passing earlier this year, his former employer, RSM US Foundation, joined with his family and friends to establish the RSM Peter S. Wilson Jr. Memorial Endowed Scholarship for accounting students.

Michael Evans joined the Wolfpack as an engineering major but soon realized big data and statistics were his calling. Shortly after switching majors, and thanks to the Park Scholarships Program, Evans made his way into the world of entrepreneurship by co-founding the nonprofit 321 Coffee.

Paying It Forward

Ryan Unger ’20 received support from the Student Emergency Fund after losing his home and his job in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, as an alumnus working at John Deere, he was able to make a gift to help students facing similar struggles.

NC State Announces Inaugural Goodnight Early Career Innovators

NC State’s inaugural class of Goodnight Early Career Innovators has been announced. This new program will strengthen retention by recognizing and rewarding promising NC State early-career faculty whose scholarship is in STEM or STEM education, and it was made possible by a gift from longtime NC State supporters Dr. Jim and Mrs. Ann Goodnight. The 24 faculty selected will receive $22,000 ­for each of the next three years to support their scholarship and research endeavors.

Park Scholarships Class of 2023 Explores Housing Inequality During Learning Lab I

The Park Scholarships Class of 2023 chose housing inequality and gentrification as the subject of their Learning Lab I, an annual experience designed and implemented by Park Scholars to provide insight into leadership through the lens of a challenge currently facing the people of North Carolina. The Class of 2023’s planned Learning Lab I experience in Durham and Goldsboro for 2020 was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, so the students redesigned their 2021 experience for an online format and broadened their geographic focus.

Lunn to Step Down as NC State Veterinary Medicine Dean in January

NC State College of Veterinary Medicine Dean Paul Lunn, who has led the college through a period of substantial growth and sustained world influence since 2012, will step down from his post in January 2022 to become dean of his alma mater, the University of Liverpool School of Veterinary Science. The college has seen tremendous growth in philanthropic support during Lunn’s tenure, rising 150% and leading to increased funding for student scholarships.

College of Education Dean Mary Ann Danowitz to Step Down

After leading NC State’s College of Education since 2016, Dean Mary Ann Danowitz will return to the college’s faculty in the Department of Educational Leadership, Policy and Human Development effective Oct. 5, 2021. During Danowitz’s tenure, the college has experienced four straight years of growth in new student enrollment. This growth has been bolstered by successful fundraising partnerships, including new scholarships and funding to start the Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research.

Labcorp to Sponsor Leadership in Technology Speakers Series

Labcorp has made a multi-year commitment to serve as the sole named sponsor of the Department of Computer Science’s popular Leadership in Technology Speaker Series. The three-year sponsorship commitment runs through the end of the 2023-24 academic year and is expected to feature five to six high-profile technology leaders each year.
