Scholarship Support Helped Sarah Schuetz ’21MED Prepare for School Counseling Career

With a passion for helping children in a school setting and knowing that she wanted to incorporate psychology and counseling within her career, Sarah Schuetz decided to continue her education in the NC State College of Education’s master of education in school counseling program. The Kimberly F. Crews Memorial Scholarship helped alleviate the financial burden while Schuetz gained invaluable hands-on experiences as a school counselor.

Park Scholar Emily Neville ’20 majored in political science and minored in French, but now she’s rocking the design and textile worlds with Reborn, her company that turns old clothes and scraps into fashionable keepsakes. “Everybody’s got things piled up in their closet that they aren’t going to wear anymore,” she says. “Those things don’t need to wind up in the landfill.”

Chertock Named Martin Distinguished Professor

The College of Sciences has named Alina Chertock, head of the Department of Mathematics, as the LeRoy B. Martin Jr. Distinguished Professor. Chertock is a prominent mathematician who joined the NC State faculty in 2002. She has served as the head of the Department of Mathematics since 2016 and is also the associate director of the Center for Research in Scientific Computation at NC State.

Recent Kolbas Gift Supports Students Academically and Socially

The late Robert “Bob” M. Kolbas, who passed away in June 2020, was a deeply impactful professor in NC State’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering for 35 years. As part of his long legacy of supporting students, he and his wife, Yan Kolbas, made a gift before his death to the Kolbas MakerSpace, an initiative he helped get off the ground in 2017 and a valuable resource for students that empowers them to create and work on electronics projects for their classes, extracurriculars and personal interests.

Distinguished Goodnight Award Recipients for 2021 Announced

Recent graduates Christian Kennedy and LouLou Batta are the 10th and 11th recipients, respectively, of the Distinguished Goodnight Award. The awards are presented at the end of the academic year to a graduating Goodnight Scholar from each cohort who best embodied the core values and mission of the program along with a dedication to professional development, civic engagement and scholastic achievement.

Landscape Architecture Professor Lewis Clarke Passes Away at 94

Lewis Clarke, FASLA, passed away on June 6, 2021. Clarke catalyzed the evolution of American landscape architecture for more than 65 years as a professor at the North Carolina State University School (now College) of Design and as a visiting lecturer at numerous universities. Through nearly five decades of active practice, his achievements were multi-faceted, award-winning and historically significant. His contributions endure through donated papers and drawings at NC State University Libraries’ Special Collections Research Center.

Farm Credit Associations of NC Supports Soldier to Ag Program

The Farm Credit Associations of North Carolina, the leading provider of credit to farmers and rural residents in North Carolina, has made a generous $30,000 gift to NC State’s Soldier to Agriculture Program. The five-week program — offered through the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences’ Agricultural Institute — provides in-depth career introductions and hands-on training to help veterans make the transition from military service to a career in agriculture, North Carolina’s top industry. In addition, the Farm Credit Associations of North Carolina has been named a 2021-2022 sponsor of the program.
