CCEE Ph.D. Student Jenero Knowles Wins Witherspoon Graduate Fellowship

CCEE Ph.D. student Jenero Knowles, advised by Dr. Casey Dietrich, was awarded the Witherspoon Graduate Fellowship for Summer 2022 from NC State’s Graduate School. The competitive one-year award, named in honor of Dr. Augustus M. Witherspoon, who was the second Black graduate student to receive a doctorate from NC State and the first Black professor at the university, is given to rising second-year graduate students who support Black communities at NC State and beyond.

Goodnight Spotlight: Gaven Bell

Gaven Bell’s extensive involvement within the NC State community began even before she stepped on campus as a freshman, as she participated in research with Dr. David Tarpy in the NC State Apiculture Lab during her senior year in high school. Now only one year away from graduation, she reflects on highlights of her college experience, which have included writing an award-winning play for the NC State Theatre, having mentors and role models in the STEM field who are women, and vast involvement within the Goodnight Scholars Program.

IEI Receives Endowment Gift to Support Hunt Internship

NC State’s Institute for Emerging Issues has received a gift from former Gov. James B. Hunt, Jr. and his wife, Carolyn, establishing an endowment that will continue to fund the institute’s Hunt Internship. The Hunt Internship gives an undergraduate NC State student the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in public policy by working with North Carolinians to address new issues and solve problems facing the state.

Scholarship Support Helps Create an Inclusive Classroom

In addition to the preparation elementary education major Kristen Frandock is receiving through NC State’s College of Education, she’s also receiving financial support in the form of the Moshakos Family Teacher Education Scholarship. The scholarship she received to cover her tuition and fees has enabled her to afford her textbooks as well as supplies and materials for her future students.

Distinguished Goodnight Award Recipients for 2022 Announced

The Distinguished Goodnight Award is presented at the end of the academic year to a graduating Goodnight Scholar from each cohort who best embodied the core values and mission of the Goodnight Scholars Program. This year, Vie Villafuerte ‘T22 and Lacey Malinsky ’22 were named the recipients of this prestigious community award.

Mahone to Lead NC State Alumni Engagement and Annual Giving

A higher education professional with a track record of success, innovation and inclusion, Reshunda Mahone will join NC State in August as the new associate vice chancellor for alumni engagement and annual giving. In a higher education career spanning more than two decades, Mahone has continually exceeded goals — and expectations — by increasing alumni engagement, overall giving and efficiency at each of her previous institutions. She currently serves as assistant dean for advancement and alumni engagement for the Goizueta Business School at Emory University.

Inhalable COVID-19 Vaccine Shows Promise in Rodent Model

Researchers have created an inhalable COVID-19 vaccine that is shelf-stable at room temperature for up to three months, targets the lungs specifically and effectively, and allows for self-administration via an inhaler. Ke Cheng, the Randall B. Terry Jr. Distinguished Professor in Regenerative Medicine at NC State and a professor in the NC State/UNC-Chapel Hill Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering, along with colleagues from UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke University, led the development of the vaccine prototype from proof-of-concept to animal studies.

Erin Seekamp Named Goodnight Distinguished Professor of Coastal Resilience and Sustainability

Dr. Erin Seekamp, a professor of parks, recreation and tourism management and an extension tourism specialist in the College of Natural Resources, has been appointed Goodnight Distinguished Professor of Coastal Resilience and Sustainability, as well as director of the Coastal Resilience and Sustainability Initiative. The appointment is effective August 16.

Coat of Excellence: Gratitude for Following the Biology for Blu

Gabrielle Paul-McKenzie has been honored with a Coat of Excellence Award from Steve and Beth Fowler in recognition of her work with their dog Blu. The Coat of Excellence program is a special way clients at the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine and Hospital can honor a faculty clinician, intern, resident or staff member who has touched their lives and the lives of their animals. The $10,000 donation helps support veterinary hospital services and includes a white lab coat embroidered with the name of the honoree.

Global Alumni Spotlight: Designing Our Future

Urmica Yelavarthy ’21 enrolled at NC State to attain her master’s degree in architecture with a certificate in energy and technology as well as public interest design. Originally from Bangalore, India, Urmica was drawn to the university for its one-of-a-kind Airport Design Studio, which is taught by Wayne Place, Goodnight Distinguished Professor in Architecture. She is currently working as a design professional at Fentress Architects in Denver, Colorado.
