Proactive Steps Linked to Reduced Medical Costs, Hospital Visits for Children With Asthma

A new study looking at data from tens of thousands of children with asthma finds that several widely available interventions are associated with reduced medical costs and a reduced likelihood that the children will need to visit an emergency room or stay in the hospital. Julie Swann, lead author of the study, is the department head and A. Doug Allison Distinguished Professor of the Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at NC State.

Jenkins MAC Program Honors Alumnus and Donors at 2nd Annual Celebration

On Nov. 12, during its celebration reception, the Jenkins MAC Program at the Poole College of Management recognized three exceptional individuals who have made significant and ongoing contributions to the program: John McKeever CPA ’05, Mike Constantino ’84 and ’85 and Lori Constantino ’84. Typically held at Vaughn Towers in Carter Finley Stadium, this year’s event was held virtually.

Diversity Seminar Series to Address Inequities in Natural Resources

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion at NC State’s College of Natural Resources is launching a virtual seminar series to address the discrimination and systemic inequalities faced by marginalized individuals in fields related to natural resources. Funded by the Duke Energy Foundation, the Diversity, Inclusion and Racial Equity (DIRE) Dialog seminar series aims to create a lasting impact within the college community that brings about a change-culture to further promote a climate of equity, inclusion and belonging.

Grant Continues Support of Crop DNA Replication Research

Two NC State professors recently received a three-year, $3.3 million grant from the National Science Foundation to continue their work of 17 years unraveling how plants control DNA replication and how this influences agronomic traits. Linda Hanley-Bowdoin, a William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor of Plant and Microbial Biology, is the lead investigator on the grant. Bill Thompson, a Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Plant and Microbial Biology, is the co-investigator.

Four months after Gene Deese started his doctorate program, Hurricane Florence impacted the area where he lived. Soon after, he received an email from the College of Education’s Dean Mary Ann Danowitz informing him about NC State’s resources for aid. That kindness motivates him to give back to the college.

Sarah J. Carrier, Elizabeth C. Dickey, Ryan E. Emanuel and Jorge A. Piedrahita were recently recognized by the NC State Alumni Association for their outstanding graduate-level teaching. Each of them received a $4,000 award as part of the honor.

Kim Bloomfield ’02 and Ricky Bloomfield ’02 Create the Eighth Co-Named Park Scholarship

Park alumni Kim Bloomfield and Ricky Bloomfield gifted $350,000 to create the endowment, which will be paired with other Park Foundation funds to support a Park Scholarship in perpetuity. This is the third co-named Park Scholarship created by Park alumni and the second given on an NC State Day of Giving.

Learn more about the professional accomplishments, voluntarism and philanthropy of Meredith Williams, Bill Trent and Ellison Anne Williams, as well as the achievements of Gino Fernandes, a senior in microbiology who spoke at Red and White Night 2019.
