As a William Neal Reynolds Professor in NC State’s Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, Mike Walden is leaving a post that involved teaching, research and Extension education. Walden has been the go-to agricultural economist in North Carolina for 43 years, and even though he retires on March 31, he has pledged to continue doing that.

Manali Shirsekar Wins Girls in STEM Scholarship Award

Manali Shirsekar, a third-year student studying computer science, won the 2020-21 Girls in STEM Scholarship Award in recognition of her leadership and advocacy for minority participation in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) careers within the NC State community. Girls Who STEM, an organization focused on the education, empowerment and inclusion of women in STEM, presented the award.

The stars aligned for Kali Fillhart ’21, a Virginia native studying anthropology and creative writing, when she came to NC State and developed her passion for activism and feminism. Fillhart’s passions have led her to work as a poll worker for the primary and general elections, learn about the intersection of astrology and feminism at the Portland School of Astrology during a gap year, volunteer as an interpersonal violence prevention peer educator with The Movement and work as a programming intern for the Women’s Center.

Sisterhood Celebration Provides Reflections on ‘Normal Never Was’

This year’s NC State Sisterhood Celebration brought together nearly 250 members of the campus community to celebrate the achievements of women while acknowledging the challenges and hardships of the past year. The celebration, with a theme based on the writings of poet, activist and author Sonya Renee Taylor, was sponsored by the Council on the Status of Women and the Women’s Center. Learn more about the event and the Equity Award for Women nominees, which included University Advancement’s Christina Walker. Walker was recognized for her work leading the establishment of the Wolfpack Women in Philanthropy.
