Park Parent and Selection Committee Member Brent Bumgarner Pledges 9th Co-Named Park Scholarship

Brent Bumgarner and his wife, Laura, made the commitment to fund a co-named Park Scholarship in their estate plans, submitting the paperwork on NC State Day of Giving in March 2021. Their $350,000 endowment will be matched by existing Park Foundation funds to cover one Park Scholarship in perpetuity.

After earning her associate’s degree, Erika Allen ’23 took a gap year to discover her calling. She ended up serving as a children’s youth director at her church, and through that experience, she found a love for teaching as a way to give back to her community. As one of two students selected to participate in the College of Education Summer Internship Program, she was able to serve her home community while honoring the memory of Chantal Warfield ’19, for whom the program was established.

The College of Natural Resources has partnered with Twiddy & Company, a hospitality firm that manages more than 1,100 vacation homes on the Outer Banks, to launch the Lighthouse Fund for Sustainable Tourism. The fund supports Whitney Knollenberg, an assistant professor in the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management, as she conducts research and outreach activities across the Outer Banks to promote sustainable tourism development.

4 Questions for NC State’s 4 Churchill Scholars

This spring, Park Scholars Nikhil Milind ’21 and Ana Sofia Uzsoy ’21 were named NC State’s third and fourth Churchill Scholars, following in the footsteps of Park alumni Mia de los Reyes ’16 and Chris Cooper ’17. The Churchill Scholarship facilitates scientific exchange between the U.S. and the U.K. by sponsoring graduate-level study at the University of Cambridge for 15-17 students, including full tuition, a stipend, travel costs and the chance to apply for a special research grant.
