A Passion for Care

Park Scholar Holly Ray ’06 developed an interest in health care during high school while helping to care for her grandfather who had Alzheimer’s disease. Since December 2018, she has served as the medical director of the New Hanover Regional Medical Center’s Surgery Navigation Center in Wilmington, North Carolina, putting into practice the skills and life lessons the Park program instilled in her.

For Pets in Recovery at NC State, Small Stuffed Animals Make a Big Difference

Before the COVID-19 pandemic began, pet owners often left a little bit of home with their pets — usually a toy or blanket — when they were admitted to the NC State Veterinary Hospital. Since late last year, hundreds of stuffed animals have been donated to the hospital by veterinary technicians, hospital staff, CVM students and community members to fill the void created by COVID-19 restrictions.

New Colleagues to Lead the Climate Leaders Program

The Kenan Institute for Engineering, Technology & Science (KIETS) at NC State University and the NC State Coastal Resilience and Sustainability Initiative are pleased to announce the selection of Goodnight Innovation Distinguished Professor Ruoying (Roy) He and Amanda Mueller to lead the development of the KIETS Climate Leaders Program, a new initiative that will bring together students and faculty to focus on solutions for mitigating or reversing the negative effects of climate change.

Genia Tyson Bone and her late husband, CALS alumnus Dale Bone, established the Dale and Genia Bone Scholars Program before his passing in order to provide scholarships to migrant farm workers and their children. Now, Genia is honoring Dale’s memory by donating to the construction of his alma mater’s new Plant Sciences Building.

The Chancellor’s Innovation Fund (CIF), founded in 2010, provides seed funding to NC State research projects that have promise for market success. The CIF aims to help these research projects bridge the gap between public and private funding — for every dollar the CIF has awarded, it has generated close to $20 in additional funding or investment.

Making Her Mark: Wei Gao Honored as University Scholar

Wei Gao, associate professor of textile engineering, chemistry and science (TECS) in the Wilson College of Textiles, was recently named a University Faculty Scholar in NC State’s 2021 class, joining 20 other early- and mid-career faculty who received this designation. The honor recognizes outstanding academic achievements and contributions to NC State through their teaching, scholarship and service to the university and beyond.

Nikhil Milind, who graduated this year, is going to Cambridge University to continue his studies into links between human genetics and diseases. The Park Scholars alumnus is one of only 17 students chosen from around the country this year to take part in the program conceived by former Prime Minister Winston Churchill to bring Americans over to study at one of the world’s elite universities.
