Partner Profile: The Golden LEAF Foundation

The Sept. 6 groundbreaking for the NC State University Plant Sciences Building, a 185,000-square-foot research facility that will stand in the heart of Centennial Campus, was a milestone. Among the guest speakers at the ceremony was Randy Isenhower, board chairman of the Golden LEAF Foundation, which has awarded NC State $48 million in combined grants for the Plant Sciences Initiative. That funding included the largest single contribution ever made to the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

NC State Announces First Scholarship in Entrepreneurship

The e5x Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship for student entrepreneurs, endowed by NC State alumna and founder of Neo IP JiNan Glasgow George on the university's first Day of Giving. This year’s recipient is Katie Lawson, a sophomore in the College of Engineering who is studying industrial and systems engineering.

A Big Night for Holt

Former standout Wolfpack student-athlete Torry Holt will be honored at Thursday night's football game against Syracuse, in recognition of his upcoming induction into the National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame. The two-time all-America receiver will be the sixth NC State player to have his accomplishments memorialized in the hall, which is located in Atlanta.

Teaching Fellow Hannah Watlington: ‘I Want to Help Students See the Beauty in Math’

The North Carolina Teaching Fellows Program, as well support from the Jerry and Elizabeth Godwin Scholarship and the Dr. Estelle E. White Endowed Scholarship, is helping Hannah Watlington '22 better prepare for her future career. Watlington plans to take what she has learned in the classroom and use it to make a difference as a high school math teacher in a rural or high-needs area in North Carolina.

Hornsby receives College of Engineering Faculty Senior Scholarship

The College of Engineering has named civil engineering student and Goodnight Scholar Gracie Marie Hornsby as the 2019 Faculty Senior Scholarship recipient. The scholarship is awarded annually to a full-time student (with a projected graduation date in the following academic year) who exemplifies academic excellence, intellectual breadth and depth of character.

Antibody Testing Reveals Dogs Can Suffer from Same Autoimmune Encephalitis as Humans

Natasha Olby, the Dr. Kady M. Gjessing and Rahna M. Davidson Distinguished Chair in Gerontology, and her research team at the College of Veterinary Medicine have found that dogs can suffer from the same type of autoimmune encephalitis that people do. The finding could lead to better screening methods for diagnosis and possibly more effective treatments for canine encephalitis.

Registration Open for This Year’s Shelton Leadership Forum

The forum, a nationally recognized event heading into its 18th successful year, welcomes participants from all over North Carolina and from surrounding states for a day focused on practical lessons in values-based leadership. Networking opportunities are plentiful with an audience of corporate and emerging leaders. This year's keynote speakers include Jim Whitehurst, president and CEO of Red Hat; Natalie Nixon, president of Figure 8 Thinking; and Jim Kouzes, author of the bestseller The Leadership Challenge.

Distinguished and Outstanding CALS Alumni Honored

In recognition of their leadership and advocacy, Richard Reich and Keith Shoemaker were honored Sept. 6 as this year’s Distinguished Alumni Award winners for NC State’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The CALS Alumni and Friends Society also presented Outstanding Alumni and Outstanding Young Alumni awards, which recognize excellence and the achievements of former students in their careers and communities.

E. Carroll Joyner Beef Education Unit Dedicated

Key partners in North Carolina’s beef industry gathered Sept. 14 to celebrate the naming of NC State's Beef Education Unit after prominent College of Agriculture and Life Sciences alumnus E. Carroll Joyner. Joyner has played an active role in the university's agricultural program since graduating in 1956. He donated his Angus beef herd to NC State to start the North Carolina Cattleman’s Foundation in the 1980s, and his naming gift will help transform beef cattle education, research and extension programs in North Carolina for generations to come.

Beyond the Belltower: Season 2

Beyond the Bell Tower is a podcast for students enrolled in NC State's TRIO programs, with current students, alumni and community members sharing personal stories to offer guidance. While aid programs help students overcome financial barriers to higher education, TRIO addresses class, social and cultural barriers; although TRIO is federally funded, there are many opportunities for donors to support opportunity for its students. The most recent episode of Beyond the Bell Tower features Khalia Braswell, a 2013 alumna and the CEO and founder of INTech, a nonprofit fostering interest in technology among young girls of color.
