Kish Named Director of NC State Nanofabrication Facility

Fred Kish, MC Dean Term Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, will oversee the Nanofabrication Facility, a Class 100/Class 1000 cleanroom. The NNF provides semiconductor processing capabilities for NC State faculty and students in engineering as well as textiles, physics, chemistry and other programs Along with on-campus users, it is made available to clients in business and at other academic institutions.

Scissors and Shovels: A Year of Transformation for CALS

It’s the largest infrastructure expansion in College of Agriculture and Life Sciences history: In the space of one year, six major CALS building projects have broken ground or opened their doors. More are on the way. In addition to multiyear new construction like the NC State University Plant Sciences Building, there are important smaller projects, including the transformational gifts and naming of the E. Carroll Joyner Beef Education Unit and the Dinah E. Gore Teaching and Research Kitchens.

A Class Act

After more than a decade, NC State's Goodnight Scholars Program —which supports low- to middle-income students who plan careers in science, technology, engineering, math or education — has grown to include full-time staff and activities like retreats and mentoring opportunities. There were 25 students in the first group of scholars; today 50 graduating high school seniors and 20 transfer students are awarded the scholarship each year, making it the second-largest comprehensive full-ride scholarship in the state.

Claire Mellott ’20 Volunteers with AmeriCorps VISTA

Having developed an interest in public health from participating in the Park Scholarships Speaker Series, Claire Mellott '20 discovered the Rural Works! program and its partnership with NC State. Focused on addressing public health issues in local areas, Rural Works! provided Mellott with the opportunity to learn more about opioid misuse while serving in Asheville.

The Power of Giving: Entrepreneur and Philanthropist (and CALS Alum) Carroll Joyner

Since graduating in 1956 with a bachelor's degree in animal science, E. Carroll Joyner has become one of NC State’s most generous and lauded philanthropists. He holds an honorary doctorate, and the university’s visitor center carries his name. Most recently, the E. Carroll Joyner Beef Unit at Lake Wheeler Laboratories was named in a Sept. 14 ceremony.

New CVM Canine Health Studies Receive Morris Animal Foundation Funding

Two innovative canine health studies at the College of Veterinary Medicine have been awarded funding by the Morris Animal Foundation. Neurology and neurosurgery professor Natasha Olby, the Dr. Kady M. Gjessing and Rahna M. Davidson Distinguished Chair in Gerontology, is at the helm of a two-year study aimed at developing a test that quickly gauges the severity and prognosis of central nervous system injuries in dogs, and assistant professor Erin Keenihan is leading a one-year study to identify optimal anesthesia drugs for intracranial disease.

Andrews Launch Accelerator: Season Four Reflects Growth in the Program and Startup Teams

NC State alumnus Chip Andrews, a current member of the Board of Trustees, reflects on working with the fourth cohort of local entrepreneurs through the Andrews Launch Accelerator. The program was established thanks to a $1 million gift commitment from Andrews and his wife Lyn.
