Engineering America’s Future

Laura Bottomley, a teaching associate professor at NC State University, believes engineering is “a vehicle for the solution of every problem.” Bottomley is the director of Women in Engineering — a program that encourages women to consider careers in STEM fields — and the Engineering Place — which seeks to educate North Carolina citizens, particularly K-12 students, about engineering.

Top Innovator, Entrepreneurs Honored

NC State's Celebration of Innovation and Entrepreneurship honors Fran Ligler, Lampe Distinguished Professor of Biomedical Engineering, as Innovator of the Year. The John S. Risley Entrepreneur of the Year Award goes to Matthew Breen, professor of genomics and the Oscar J. Fletcher Distinguished Professor of Comparative Oncology Genetics, and to Marian McCord, the College of Natural Resources' associate dean for research. Also recognized: 15 new startups launched at NC State in the past year, recipients of this year’s Chancellor’s Innovation Fund awards and faculty members who received patents in the past year.

Finalists Chosen for 2017 Three Minute Thesis

Ten finalists representing five NC State colleges will compete in the Graduate School’s third annual Three Minute Thesis competition Oct. 31, during the university’s Red and White Week celebration. The event, which challenges graduate students to share their major research project in only three minutes, is made possible by gifts to the Graduate School Enhancement Fund.

Helping Students Dream Big, Together

NC State alumni Bryan Hum and Laura Wilkinson, who work in the government sector in Washington, D.C., became great friends as students in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. They recently teamed up to create the Wilkinson-Hum Government Scholarship, a merit-based tuition award that will support juniors and seniors interested in careers in the federal government, national security, the intelligence community, international affairs, public policy and law.
