Decision Points: Leading With Accountability

This year’s Shelton Leadership Forum provides practical strategies that current and emerging leaders can use to build a culture of accountability for self and others while also cultivating a positive work environment. Registration is still open for the forum, which will be held virtually October 21 from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

Debbie Acker Appointed Director of Shelton Leadership Center

Debbie Acker, interim director of NC State’s Shelton Leadership Center (SLC), has been named permanent director of the center following the retirement of Barbara Mulkey. Formerly the SLC’s senior associate director for operations and academic programs, Acker will continue working to inspire, educate and develop values-based leaders in her new role.

Acker Named Interim Director of the Shelton Leadership Center

Debbie Acker, senior associate director for operations and academic programs at the Shelton Leadership Center (SLC), has been named the center’s interim director, effective May 1. She will replace Barbara Mulkey, who is retiring. Acker has served in her current position since March 2019 and has been part of the center and its programs since its inception in 2003. In her role, she is responsible for managing SLC operations for all budgets and providing supervision over program areas. She assists the director with oversight of the SLC’s board of advisors, fund development and special projects related to grants and contracts.

Shelton Leadership Center Welcomes Tommy Hibbs

Tommy Hibbs recently joined the Shelton Leadership Center as the graduate assistant for pre-college programs. Hibbs is a master’s student in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program and previously taught high school English in eastern North Carolina.

Director of the Shelton Leadership Center to Retire

Barbara Mulkey has announced that she will retire effective May 1 after five years of helping fulfill the Shelton Leadership Center’s mission to develop the next generation of values-based leaders. She also has overseen personalized educational and hands-on outreach programs for professionals, college students and pre-college students. A College of Engineering alumna, Mulkey has served in a variety of university volunteer leadership positions, too.

Annual Shelton Leadership Forum Coming Up on Oct. 1

The Shelton Leadership Forum, heading into its 19th year, involves participants from all over North Carolina and surrounding states in a day focused on practical lessons in values-based leadership. This year's theme is Leadership Challenges: The Complexity of Leading Organizations with a Global Mindset. Scheduled keynote speakers include Chuck Robbins, Carla Harris and Anders Sorman-Nilsson.

Shelton Forum to Focus on Ethical Leadership During Difficult Times

Three prominent leaders -- Jim Kouzes, Jim Whitehnurst and Natalie Nixon -- will serve as featured speakers at NC State’s Shelton Leadership Forum this Friday, Nov. 15, at the McKimmon Center. The one-day forum, celebrating its 18th anniversary, also will feature a panel session of small business leaders focusing on highly successful NC State alumni who demonstrate the “think and do” mentality.
