Red and White Week Student Giving Challenge

During Red and White Week, student groups across campus faced off in a friendly competition to benefit this year’s featured fund: Feed the Pack, the food pantry at NC State. The groups raised just under $24,000.

NC State To Lead Global Research Effort To Develop Sustainable Fibers

The College of Natural Resources recently established the Sustainable and Alternative Fibers Initiative (SAFI), a research consortium that aims to study, develop and promote the utilization of alternative fibers for packaging, hygiene, textiles and other products. SAFI has already raised $1.2 million for research and partnered with 20 companies in order to position the college as the center of excellence for the research, development and utilization of sustainable fibers.

Ray Odierno, Alum Who Served as Top Army General, Dies

Retired Army Chief of Staff Raymond T. Odierno, a four-star general who led multinational forces in the Iraq War and reshaped the way U.S. troops are trained and deployed, died of cancer on Oct. 8. Odierno earned a master’s degree in nuclear effects engineering from NC State and generously supported the university in a variety of ways, including serving as the chair of the university’s Board of Visitors and a member of the Board of Trustees.

Terrence Curtin Society Honors NC State Veterinary Medicine’s Founding Dean

The College of Veterinary Medicine’s new Terrence Curtin Society honors the legacy of its founding dean, who passed away in December, while also recognizing the individuals whose generous financial support enables the college to build on his work. Those who annually donate $1,000 or more to the college’s All Gifts Great and Small Fund will automatically become society members.

‘Community Matters Here’: Inside NC State’s Creative Writing MFA Program

Although the casual observer might be surprised to discover an excellent graduate-level creative writing program at a world-class STEM university such as NC State, the pairing actually makes sense when North Carolina’s rich literary history is taken into account. As successful as NC State’s MFA program has been, it’s now poised for even greater success thanks to Tony McLean Brown ’83 and his family, who made a $1 million gift to support the program earlier this year.

Model Advances Understanding of Incorporating 3D Printing Into Supply Chains

Getting spare parts where they need to go in a quick, reliable way is a logistical challenge for military and industrial supply chains. Researchers from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and NC State have developed a computational model to help determine how best to incorporate additive manufacturing technologies into these spare parts supply chains. Brandon McConnell, co-author of a paper on the new model, is an assistant research professor in NC State’s Edward P. Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering.
