Research Improves Accuracy of Climate Models — Particularly for Compound Extreme Events

Researchers have devised a new machine learning method to improve large-scale climate model projections and demonstrated that the new tool makes the models more accurate at both the global and regional level. Brian Reich, the Gertrude M. Cox Distinguished Professor of Statistics at NC State, co-authored the paper.

New Spectrometer Is Small Enough To Fit on Your Phone

Researchers have successfully demonstrated a spectrometer that is orders of magnitude smaller than current technologies and can accurately measure wavelengths of light from ultraviolet to the near-infrared. Franky So, the Walter and Ida Freeman Distinguished Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at NC State, and Michael Kudenov, the John and Catherine Amein Family Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at NC State, were among the paper’s co-authors.

First Father and Son Pair Receive ASM Gold Medal

The American Society for Metals (ASM) has awarded the 2026 International Gold Medal to Roger Narayan, Distinguished Professor in the Lampe Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering at NC State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Roger Narayan is the second NC State faculty member to win the award, following his father, Jagdish Narayan, the John Fan Family Distinguished Chair Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

Why You May Get Future Vaccines Via Dental Floss

Researchers have demonstrated a novel vaccine delivery method in an animal model, using dental floss to introduce vaccine via the tissue between the teeth and gums. Harvinder Singh Gill, the Ronald B. and Cynthia J. McNeill Term Professor in Nanomedicine at North Carolina State University, is a corresponding author on the paper.

Forest Biomaterials Researchers Developing Sustainable Alternative to Plastic Foam Packaging

Researchers in the Department of Forest Biomaterials including Richard Venditti, the Elis-Signe Olsson Professor of Pulp and Paper Science and Engineering, are developing a proprietary material that could serve as a sustainable alternative to one of the world’s most significant sources of pollution: plastic foam. Venditti and his collaborators recently secured support from the Chancellor’s Innovation Fund to continue their research.

Researchers Create New Way To Remove Phosphorus From Contaminated Water

Researchers including Yaroslava Yingling, Kobe Steel Distinguished Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at NC State, have created an inexpensive hydrogel that can filter phosphorus from contaminated surface waters, drinking water supplies or wastewater streams to reduce phosphorus pollution and reuse the phosphorus for agricultural and industrial applications.
