NC State’s Ruben Carbonell Receives UNC System’s O. Max Gardner Award

Ruben Carbonell, NC State's Frank Hawkins Kenan Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering, has been honored with the O. Max Gardner Award for his contributions in engineering, health care, education and public policy. The award is the most significant universitywide honor given to faculty by the University of North Carolina System.

Rodolphe Barrangou Elected to National Academy of Sciences

Rodolphe Barrangou, Todd R. Klaenhammer Distinguished Scholar in Probiotics Research and professor of food, bioprocessing and nutrition sciences at NC State, has been elected into the National Academy of Sciences, one of the world's most prestigious scientific societies.

Goodwin Wins Holladay Medal

Barry K. Goodwin, the William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor and Graduate Alumni Distinguished Professor in CALS, recently received the Alexander Quarles Holladay Medal for Excellence. The award is NC State's highest honor for academic achievement.

Four Faculty Members Receive Holladay Medal

Four faculty members recently received the Alexander Quarles Holladay Medal for Excellence, the highest academic honor bestowed by NC State and the university’s Board of Trustees: Harald Ade, Goodnight Innovation Distinguished Professor, Department of Physics; Barry Goodwin, William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor, Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics; Behnam Pourdeyhimi, William A. Klopman Distinguished Professor in Textiles, Department of Textile Engineering, Chemistry and Science, associate dean for Industry Research and Extension, College of Textiles and director, Nonwovens Cooperative Research Center; and Abdel-Fattah Seyam, department head, Charles A. Cannon Professor of Textiles, Department of Textile and Apparel, Technology and Management.

College of Natural Resources Awards Three Named Professorships

The College of Natural Resources recently appointed Dr. Erin Sills to the Edwin F. Conger Professorship, Dr. Richard Venditti to the Elis and Signe Olsson Professorship and Dr. Stephen Kelley to the Reuben Robertson Professorship. Established through the generosity of donors, the professorships ensure CNR continues to retain and support outstanding faculty.

A Distinguished Professorship for an Extraordinary Scientist

Ed Breitschwerdt, a professor of medicine and infectious diseases who came to the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine in 1982, has influenced many students to step through the college’s doors and then out into the veterinary profession. He also has trained many members of the CVM family — residents, interns, now-colleagues — who have gone on to become endowed professors. On April 3, he became one himself when he received the Melanie S. Steele Distinguished Professorship in Medicine.

Davidian Wins American Statistical Association Founders Award

The College of Sciences' Marie Davidian, J. Stuart Hunter Distinguished Professor in Statistics, has received the Founders Award from the American Statistical Association (ASA). The award is one of ASA’s highest honors and recognizes members who have rendered distinguished service to the organization.

Breeding Success

Over a career spanning nearly six decades, NC State alumnus and professor emeritus Charles Stuber helped shape the science of plant breeding. Now, thanks to the newly established Dr. Charles W. Stuber Sr. and Dr. Marilyn M. Stuber Distinguished Professorship in Plant Breeding, his influence on the field will continue well into the future.

Finding New Drugs, Faster

The Comparative Medicine Institute at NC State – directed by Jorge Piedrahita, Randall B. Terry Jr. Distinguished Professor in Translation Medicine – is launching a drug discovery initiative. It will accelerate the identification of naturally-occurring compounds with therapeutic potential, ultimately leading to the development of medicines targeting infectious diseases, inflammation, allergies and pain management.

Ligler to Receive Honorary Degree

Frances Ligler, Lampe Distinguished Professor in the UNC/NC State Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering, will be awarded an honorary doctorate from Furman University at the university’s commencement ceremony May 5. Ligler received a B.S. in biology and chemistry from Furman in 1972. She went on to earn a D. Phil. in biochemistry, and a higher doctorate, the D.Sc., for her contributions to the field of biosensors, both from Oxford University.
