Prominent Physicist Schaefer Named Doggett Distinguished Professor

NC State's College of Sciences has named Thomas Schaefer, a faculty member since 2003, as the Wesley O. Doggett Distinguished Professor. The professorship was established by a group of physics alumni, led by Norman Banks, David Montgomery and Lawrence Ives, to honor the late Wes Doggett, one of the first graduates of the university's Bachelor of Nuclear Engineering program and a member of the physics faculty for 35 years. The gifts were supplemented by a match from an endowment established by anonymous donors that supports the activities of a full professor in the Department of Physics.

Leading a Global Conversation on Deforestation Through Remote Sensing

A partnership between Edwin F. Conger Professor Dr. Erin Sills and assistant professor Dr. Josh Gray, who both work in the College of Natural Resources' Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources, is revealing never-before-seen images of Earth and providing new snapshots of deforestation patterns that can better track landscape changes over time. Accurate data is key to international discussions about tropical deforestation and climate change.

Two Faculty Named Goodnight Innovation Distinguished Professors

The College of Sciences recently awarded distinguished professorships to two of its outstanding scientists: Ruoying He of the Department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences and Fred Wright of the Departments of Statistics and Biological Sciences. Their Goodnight Innovation Distinguished Professorships were made possible by a gift from longtime NC State supporters Jim and Ann Goodnight.

Gabr Named Distinguished Professor of Civil Engineering and Construction

Dr. Mohammed Gabr, who joined the NC State faculty in 1998, is named to the professorship in the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering made possible by gifts from many groups and individuals within the construction industry and College of Engineering alumni community. His recent research interests include innovative soil improvement techniques and offshore foundation systems supporting renewable energy devices.

Fletcher’s Retirement Marks End of an Era at CVM

Oscar Fletcher, who served as the second dean of the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine, saw the college mature into one of the top veterinary schools in the country as a landmark gift from Randall B. Terry transformed its campus. In 2015, the Oscar J. Fletcher Distinguished Professorship in Comparative Oncology Genetics, currently held by genomics professor Matthew Breen, was created; it honors Fletcher's extraordinary contributions as an administrator and educator.

Donald Brenner, Kobe Steel Distinguished Professor in NC State's Department of Materials Science and Engineering, has been named head of the department. Brenner has served as interim head since fall 2017.

Knappe Named S. James Ellen Jr. Distinguished Professor of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering

Dr. Detlef Knappe, who joined the NC State faculty in 1996, has been named the S. James Ellen Jr. Distinguished Professor of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering. Knappe has conducted research on water treatments for 25 years and is a recognized leader in the field.

Istook Named Cornelson Family Distinguished Professor

Dr. Cynthia Istook, professor in NC State's Department of Textile and Apparel, Technology and Management (TATM), has been named the Cornelson Family Distinguished Professor of Textile and Apparel Design. She plans to use the professorship’s attendant funding to support state-of-the-art technology and training for faculty and students, and hopes to establish a fashion and apparel technology center.
