Frey Receives Award for Excellence in Air Pollution Control

NC State's H. Christopher Frey received the 2019 Frank A. Chambers Excellence in Air Pollution Control Award from the Air & Waste Management Association. The Glenn E. and Phyllis J. Futrell Distinguished University Professor and a 25-year faculty member in the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering, Frey is an internationally recognized expert in air quality whose research addresses the continuum between energy use, emissions and exposure to air pollution, as well as tools and techniques for developing policy-relevant insights.

Chemist Williams Named LORD Corporation Distinguished Scholar

The College of Sciences has named Gavin Williams as the Thomas Lord, LORD Corporation Distinguished Scholar at NC State. The distinguished professorship was made possible thanks to a gift from LORD Corporation. Williams, associate head of the Department of Chemistry, uses microbes as factories toward the development of potent, more effective antibiotics.

Charging up Electric Vehicles

Dr. Iqbal Husain, ABB Distinguished Professor, is one of several College of Engineering faculty members who are engaged in research that may ensure wider adoption of electric vehicles in the future. The subjects of their work range from the materials within lithium ion batteries, which are used to power electric vehicles, to the development of a smaller, faster charger.

Chemist Pierce Named LORD Corporation Distinguished Scholar

The College of Sciences has named Joshua Pierce of the Department of Chemistry as the Hugh C. Lord, LORD Corporation Distinguished Scholar at NC State. The distinguished professorship was made possible thanks to a gift from LORD Corporation. Pierce is a prominent chemist whose research includes building molecules that can be used to create new drugs to fight infectious diseases, cancer and chronic pain.

Ghosh Named William A. Klopman Distinguished Professor in Textiles

Tushar Ghosh has been named the William A. Klopman Distinguished Professor in Textiles in recognition of his outstanding service to the Wilson College of Textiles and the broader textile industry. The professor in textile engineering, chemistry and science has been a faculty member since he graduated from NC State in 1987 with a Ph.D. in fiber and polymer science. He has mentored more than 40 graduate students.

Zhang Named Walker Distinguished Professor in Textile Innovation

Xiangwu Zhang of the Department of Textile Engineering, Chemistry and Science was recently named the Samuel S. Walker Distinguished Professor in Textile Innovation. Zhang is also the Wilson College of Textiles associate dean for research, an Alumni Distinguished Graduate Professor and an inaugural University Faculty Scholar. He's an internationally acclaimed leader in the development of nanostructured and multifunctional polymer, composite, fiber and textile materials.

New Class of William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professors Selected

Six professors in NC State's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences were recently named William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Progessors: Jose Alonso, Carolyn Dunn, Rob Dunn, Amy Grunden, James Walgenbach and Todd Wehner. The professorship is one of the college's highest honors, created to recognize outstanding scholars, leaders, teachers and mentors.

NC State Honors Outstanding Faculty

NC State recognized more than 30 faculty members for their outstanding contributions to the university community in teaching, research and engagement during the 2019 Celebration of Faculty Excellence on May 1. Among those honored were Donald Bitzer, Distinguished University Professor, Department of Computer Science, and Youngsoo "Richard" Kim, Jimmy D. Clark Distinguished University Professor in Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering, who received the Alexander Quarles Holladay Medal for Excellence, NC State’s highest award recognizing faculty achievement.
