Remembering Tom Banks

H. Thomas Banks, Distinguished University Professor, LeRoy B. Martin Jr. Distinguished Professor and associate director of the Center for Research in Scientific Computation, passed away at the age of 79 on Dec. 31. In addition to his exceptional scientific achievements, including over 550 peer-reviewed publications, a hallmark of Banks' intellectual efforts during his career was the education and training of young mathematicians and scientists. Indeed, more than 50 graduate students and 40 postdoctoral scholars have benefited from his scientific wisdom and mentorship.

Fusing Disciplines, Transforming Graduate Education

The Agricultural Biotechnology in Food, Energy and Water Systems program is showing graduate students the full spectrum of issues in biotech and genetic engineering, from the lab, to the field, to the public square. And it’s an approach that could inform how we seek solutions to other grand challenges, explains Jennifer Kuzma, Goodnight-NC GSK Foundation Distinguished Professor in the School of Public and International Affairs and co-director of the Genetic Engineering and Society Center.
