New Catalyst Makes Styrene Manufacturing Cheaper, Greener

Chemical engineering researchers have developed a new catalyst that significantly increases yield in styrene manufacturing while simultaneously reducing energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. Fanxing Li, corresponding author of the work, is Alcoa Professor of Chemical Engineering at NC State.

Hall Named the Worley H. Clark Jr. Distinguished University Professor in Engineering

Chancellor Randy Woodson has appointed Dr. Carol K. Hall to the distinguished professorship in the College of Engineering. Hall was one of the first women in the United States to be appointed to a chemical engineering faculty. She is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, serves as the Home Secretary of the Academy and has earned a long list of accolades during her distinguished career.

Pericardial Injection Effective, Less Invasive Way To Get Regenerative Therapies to Heart

Injecting hydrogels containing stem cell or exosome therapeutics directly into the pericardial cavity could be a less invasive, less costly and more effective means of treating cardiac injury, according to new research from NC State and UNC-Chapel Hill. Ke Cheng, Randall B. Terry Jr. Distinguished Professor in Regenerative Medicine at NC State’s Department of Molecular Biomedical Sciences and professor in the NC State/UNC-Chapel Hill Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering, is a leader of the study.

As a William Neal Reynolds Professor in NC State’s Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, Mike Walden is leaving a post that involved teaching, research and Extension education. Walden has been the go-to agricultural economist in North Carolina for 43 years, and even though he retires on March 31, he has pledged to continue doing that.

Researchers Demonstrate Self-Sterilizing Polymers Work Against SARS-CoV-2

Researchers from NC State, Boston University and Kraton Corporation have demonstrated a family of self-sterilizing polymers that are effective at inactivating coronaviruses, including SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Richard Spontak, a Distinguished Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and a professor of materials science and engineering at NC State, is co-author of a paper on the work accepted for publication in Advanced Science.
