Cranos Williams Named Goodnight Distinguished Professor

NC State faculty member Cranos Williams was recently named a Goodnight Distinguished Professor in Agricultural Analytics by the College of Engineering and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The new professorship was bestowed on Williams for promoting cross-college collaborations leading to next-generation precision agriculture solutions, as well as for his research, teaching and leadership in using data-driven approaches to understand the biological processes behind plants’ growth, development and adaptation to changing environments.

Building Dedication Marks Milestone for N.C. Plant Sciences Initiative

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences will dedicate the NC State University Plant Sciences Building on April 12 at 11 a.m. The event is free to attend, and the public is invited to join state officials, university leaders, donors and friends in the celebration.

Collins Continues Support for Agricultural Innovation

William Collins Sr. has made his mark on NC State in many ways. He was a renowned Extension tobacco specialist, a natural teacher and pioneering researcher and has volunteered for University Advancement. The 2018 Watauga Medalist is also a philanthropist who, with his wife, Ann Collins, has endowed a professorship among other gifts. Now, he has made yet another mark on the college and university as a donor by naming a room in the Plant Sciences Building.

Agriculture Loses Longtime Advocate Weathington

Dan Weathington, a longtime friend of NC State's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and a key supporter of the North Carolina Plant Sciences Initiative, passed away Aug. 3. Weathington was a true ambassador and advocate for North Carolina agriculture, said CALS Dean Richard Linton.

Generational Generosity Supports Agribusiness Breakthroughs

NC State prepared Bill Culpepper for a career in agribusiness when he graduated in 1966, and his family has followed in his footsteps. The Culpeppers recently made a significant gift to NC State and the Plant Sciences Initiative, naming the lobby space of the new Plant Sciences Building slated to open in 2022.

Greenhouse Vegetable Growers Support Plant Sciences Initiative

The North Carolina Greenhouse Vegetable Growers’ Association, which originated in 1972 and whose membership primarily produces fresh tomatoes, has made a gift of $7,000 to the Plant Sciences Initiative. The gift honors NC State’s past support and continued partnership in helping the members improve their operations and meet their challenges.

Partner Profile: The Golden LEAF Foundation

The Sept. 6 groundbreaking for the NC State University Plant Sciences Building, a 185,000-square-foot research facility that will stand in the heart of Centennial Campus, was a milestone. Among the guest speakers at the ceremony was Randy Isenhower, board chairman of the Golden LEAF Foundation, which has awarded NC State $48 million in combined grants for the Plant Sciences Initiative. That funding included the largest single contribution ever made to the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

Funded through a public-private partnership, the Plant Sciences Building will ensure NC State remains at the forefront of plant sciences research for generations to come. More than 400 participants, including North Carolina agricultural leaders, university administrators, students, alumni and agricultural biotechnology company representatives, were in attendance for the ceremonial groundbreaking.
