Scissors and Shovels: A Year of Transformation for CALS

It’s the largest infrastructure expansion in College of Agriculture and Life Sciences history: In the space of one year, six major CALS building projects have broken ground or opened their doors. More are on the way. In addition to multiyear new construction like the NC State University Plant Sciences Building, there are important smaller projects, including the transformational gifts and naming of the E. Carroll Joyner Beef Education Unit and the Dinah E. Gore Teaching and Research Kitchens.

Partner Profile: The Golden LEAF Foundation

The Sept. 6 groundbreaking for the NC State University Plant Sciences Building, a 185,000-square-foot research facility that will stand in the heart of Centennial Campus, was a milestone. Among the guest speakers at the ceremony was Randy Isenhower, board chairman of the Golden LEAF Foundation, which has awarded NC State $48 million in combined grants for the Plant Sciences Initiative. That funding included the largest single contribution ever made to the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

Keep the Faith, Finish the Tower

The Memorial Belltower has a history that is almost hard to believe. Built to honor the NC State alumni killed in World War I, the 115-foot Legend in Stone has always been missing a final piece: real bells. Through countless hours of research and years of effort, several NC State alumni became passionate about finishing NC State’s most iconic symbol as a way to honor those who paid the ultimate price.

A Century in the Making
