Park Scholars Host Inaugural Gerald H. Elkan Distinguished Lecture

NC State’s Park Scholarships Class of 2019 hosted the program’s inaugural Gerald H. Elkan Distinguished Lecture in Science and Society, featuring MacArthur Fellow and water quality engineer Dr. Marc Edwards, Charles Lunsford Professor of Civil Engineering at Virginia Tech. The Gerald H. Elkan Distinguished Lecture on Science and Society was established by its namesake’s former students, associates and friends in honor of Elkan’s 40-year career as a microbiology professor in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and it supports an annual talk by a prominent thought leader.

Finding Inspiration in Teaching

Julianne Donoghue, a 2014 Park Scholar alumna, found her purpose at NC State. A Teach for America veteran, she teaches mathematics at a Title I high school in Charlotte, where many students come from low-income families and teacher turnover is rampant

Trying to Capture A Common Link

Laila Knio, a senior psychology major and a Park Scholar, has created a 45-minute documentary, The Common Link, that chronicles the tales of eight Lebanese people. The film's debut this month is presented ty the departments of English and film studies, the Honors Program and the Moise A. Khayrallah Center for Lebanese Diaspora Studies.
