A Big Break for Little Bo

Ashley White is a recent graduate of East Carolina University, but her love for NC State is growing as Bo, her 10-year-old Maltese, is treated for bladder cancer by NC State Veterinary Hospital's compassionate team of experts. The cost of Bo's care is supported by the Petco Foundation and Blue Buffalo Cancer Treatment Fund, which helps pet owners focus on their pet's health rather than finances.

$2 Million Grant from North Carolina Nonprofit Aids Study of Financial Health in Retirement

The Institute of Consumer Money Management (ICMM), a North Carolina-based nonprofit, announced a $2 million grant to three leading universities for studying the financial health of low- and moderate-income Americans who are near or in retirement. Robert Clark, professor at Poole College of Management, will be the principal investigator for the grant at NC State, focusing on understanding the changes in the standard of living for these families as they enter retirement and whether income declines can be moderated by financial literacy initiatives.

Community college leaders are developing questions about how academic programs can best serve their communities after taking a deep dive into data at a two-day event hosted by the NC State College of Education’s Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research. The center was launched with support from the John M. Belk Endowment.

Improving the Odds for a Cat Named Otter

Otter the cat is making friends across the oncology unit as she undergoes treatment at NC State Veterinary Hospital. When full-course radiation therapy was recommended to Otter's owners, Melissa Tran and Jeremy Mey, they wanted to do whatever was possible to limit the recurrence of their pet's soft tissue sarcoma. Assistance from the Petco Foundation and Blue Buffalo Cancer Treatment Fund is helping defray the cost of Otter's care so her family can focus on her health rather than finances.

Gaining Ground

And a revolution in how NC State approaches plant sciences has begun with the official groundbreaking for the Plant Sciences Building on Centennial Campus. The building, funded through a public-private partnership, will help make North Carolina the world's foremost hub for plant science innovation.

Eastman Expands Partnership with NC State

Since 2012, support from Eastman Chemical Company has spanned 11 academic departments and funded 86 research projects that benefit NC State students and faculty while advancing innovation. The company, which also has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in graduate student recruitment, undergraduate ambassadors, student organizations, events and lectures, is renewing its commitment to the university.

Chemist Pierce Named LORD Corporation Distinguished Scholar

The College of Sciences has named Joshua Pierce of the Department of Chemistry as the Hugh C. Lord, LORD Corporation Distinguished Scholar at NC State. The distinguished professorship was made possible thanks to a gift from LORD Corporation. Pierce is a prominent chemist whose research includes building molecules that can be used to create new drugs to fight infectious diseases, cancer and chronic pain.

Helping Families Weather the Storm

After Pat and Almira Dallas' home was badly damaged during Hurricane Florence, they were faced with their dog T-Bone's cancer diagnosis. Fortunately, thanks to generosity from the Petco Foundation and Blue Buffalo — and the expert team at NC State Veterinary Hospital — the Dallases can focus on getting the best possible care for T-Bone, rather than the cost.

Poole Showcase Celebrates Student Innovation and Employer Engagement

VF Corporation, a worldwide apparel and footwear company headquartered in Greensboro, was named Employer of the Year at Poole College's 11th annual Leadership and Innovation Showcase. VF has been a dedicated supporter of Poole College students and their successes. The showcase also featured presentations from student teams highlighting various entrepreneurship opportunities at NC State, many of which are enhanced by private support.
